    size of defiance folder

I think I remember the downloader saying it needed around 24GB of space to download, now that the download has completed the Defiance folder is reading at 10.4GB, anyone else?

10.4 here, same size as what the beta was. They're constantly putting out little patches so maybe they estimated after the first few patches it'll be around 24gb though i don't ever remember reading that it required that much myself.

You'll need about 24 gigs total to download and unpack, then it's down to about 10.4 gigs. I have no idea why it requires so much for the initial download. If you have less than that when you first try to download it will complain and say there isn't enough hard drive space available.

Whoa really all that allocated for unpacking? More than double the size... maybe they're reserving space for the day 1 patches they warned about, if only that were true. >w<

needing double the install space plus some headroom for the download and install is normal for mmo's.

Like I said, I'm not sure. I'm just venturing a guess at why they would need all that space.

One of the possible reasons for needing more than twice the size is that most mmo's download in packages. Let's say 250 mb data packs. For 10.4gb that would be 42 packs of 250 mb. From there the installer (which itself could have another few hundred mega bytes) will extract and install the data. You see you cannot use the packages when they are not on your hard drive, thus until the installation is finished you still have all of them plus the installing game.

After the installation the data packages finally will be deleted.

How is this weird at all?

If you've got your installer and then need to copy the files to another directory it's obvious that it'll need double the space. It's not like the launcher is writing to existing files on-the-fly.

I was planning to instal on my SSD, but I needed more space, oh well.
Beta was running fine from HD.

    THIS ^^

    To help explain:

You download 10.4 gigs of the install file. You now have 10.4 gigs of files on your harddrive.

Then you start the installation, which installs another 10.4 gigs of data to your hard drive. You have now have 20.8 gigs of files on your hard drive.

The last step of the installation is to delete installation files, so it removes 10.4 gigs of files. You now have 10.4 gigs of files on your hard drive.

That's pretty much how it works for almost every downloadable game.
