I think the purpose is so that you can't sell or give high level weapons that you earned at say EGO 3000 to a friend who is at EGO 1. It may be the same stats, if the EGO1 friend can find a good weapon by chance, but you get higher chances of getting better guns, better mods the higher you go in EGO, like having more mod slots available.

So I always saw this as a way to not be able to give lowbie players a quick way of getting better weapons too soon.

No. It still takes the same amount of points to fill an overall weapon level, regardless of which weapon you use. Just because you max a certain weapon's XP doesn't mean you've reached the next overall weapon level in your stats.

So, weapon skill is a constant, and not dependent on filling your xp bar? Odd, an "instructional video" I saw on YouTube stated that "as you fill this bar" (and they moused around the weapon xp bar, then switched to the skill screen) "This skill levels up." Perhaps I misunderstood.

Well, crap. I recently re-rolled my main and namesake....from EGO level 1250. Started from scratch, just to test a theory and it seems I didn't need to from the information garnered here. JEKK.

No, that's true. The little white bar under your weapon is for the overall skill (stats) as opposed to individual weapon XP. What I'm saying is that the higher point weapons just let you use that weapon longer before having to switch to another weapon or resetting the individual weapon XP.

Think of it like this. Overall weapon skill is a bucket. In order to go to the next level, you have to fill it. Now, do you want to fill it by using teaspoons (lower point weapons) or with cups (higher point weapons)? As you go up in overall skill level, that bucket gets bigger. So when you get higher point weapons, it's kind of like the game is giving you bigger and bigger cups to try and fill the bucket with.

I had a SAW that I used quite a bit in leveling LMG skill. When I first started, the weapon would level almost with my LMG skills. And then, I would level that weapon before the LMG skill would go up. And towards the end, I'd have to reset the weapon 3x before my LMG skill rose to the next level. Had I just used a higher point SAW, I wouldn't have had to reset it quite as often.

It's a matter of preference. With SAWs, they're kind of rare, so I didn't mind using a lower point weapon to level my skills. But now I'm on to SMGs, and while I have a darling little 300 level Pulser I adore, it's getting annoying having to reset it so often. (Even though resets only cost 4K in ark salvage.)

Here's a current cap of me with my 320 VOT Pulser. Note the white bar. That's my overall weapon skill (SMG).

Now, look at the following cap and you'll see my 320 VOT Pulser is going to max out before I'm able to go to the next overall skill. That means I'll have to reset it again or switch to the purple VOT Pulser shown. (Posting both to show the points difference)

I don't know if I'm confusing you more or less now. Sorry.

From my experience, there is no base stat difference of a white AR with ego 500 compared with a white AR with ego 4000. However, you will notice that once you reach ego 2000/4000 you will start to get 4-slot weapons compared to a low ego weapon that only gets 1-2 (resets after ego 2000ish).

It is only the bonus attributes on the weapon (1 for green, 2 for blue, 3 for purple and 4 for orange) that you will see a difference. It does not differ in terms of EGO level. For short, you don't have to wait for 5000 ego to get a good weapon to use.

How to get Defiance at $9.99:

Step 1 - Register as an Ark Hunter:

    Step 2A - Defiance @ $9.99 on Steam

Opus, I think I've got it now, by George!!

I'd say the only advantage to keeping lower ego level weapons is that it's dirt cheap to add mod slots to them. An ego 100 weapon costs 1000 for the first slot, 2000 for the second, 3K and then finally 4K for a total of 10K arc salvage. Hell, that's what the first slot on a 1000ego weapon would cost. If one dropped without a slot in it already.

Sweet! It always sounds good in my head, I just don't know if it translates well to other folks.

Pretty much. Plus, the higher EGO weapons tend to have more bonuses than their lower-level counterparts.

So is it safe to say, when we have more then one of same weapon and want to clean inventory keep the higher level? even if it has less slots because it will gain more when used? Thanks very much.

Seems like they are re-doing the weapons some what. Would be nice if they left out the ridiculous labels and gave us the dps (damage per second), range, accuracy, slots (available and points needed to gain more, level in description. If it wears and needs repair fine.
