The game is up and running and there are people currently playing however: I can't get into the game all I get is "Login successful but account is unathorized to play defiance. Contact Trion support" but since there is no one actively answering at Trion support that's worthless.

yes i had the same problem played for like 2 hours and my ego was stuck at 66.logged out.could not log back in.
I was in the game for 20mins, redeemed all items etc, booster ticking away.
logged out to put my steam code in and now im locked out the server.
