Does Steam download start automatically?

With past buys from Steam it seems that the games download automatically when an update comes available. So, would I just be able to leave Steam logged on as I go to work and it will start download by itself?

No, steam doesn't manage the download for the game client. It only downloads the patcher/launcher. You need to run the patcher/launcher every time to update.

I would have thought that making a shortcut then apply a timed event to run it at a certain time. Only problem is getting past the [Next] buttons, which maybe there's a way past it.

You have to manually start a download from Steam. You can download it from Trion with your Steam CD key now. No need to wait.
