I had no big patch. To be honest, the last patch I didn't even notice...

Welcome to playing games online. It doesn't matter how long ago/soon ago you played, you're going to have to patch. Best get used to that idea. But I did laugh at, "good speed i think at about 5 mbps..." I usually get about 80 and I'm pissed off if it dips below 30.

Ha! Try having a (more or less constant) Downstream data rate of 29xx (Kbps).

I could get to the dizzying heights of 8000 - 9000 (Kbps) (realistic estimate) if I closed my ADSL account, closed the home phone account then submitted to an 18 month rolling contract for both phone and broadband with no consideration for the many years of loyalty on the home phone account!

The max speed I can get is because I live just on the far reach of the exchange and the line quality is, shall we say, not the best.

How wonderful it must be to be able to get such high speeds of 30 Mbps plus.

As for five hours of patching, I'm still on ten plus hours of downloading the trial (patcher stats).

As Synther pointed out; 'Welcome to playing games online. ... Best get used to that idea.'

Some of us (most) in UK are still on 8mbps throughput but im glad some find it funny .

.Patching didnt take too long as its all shtako and wind. Speed you're downloading patch at is right of time estimate.

I always wondered about that. The Europeans and Asians always point at the U.S. and laugh about how bad our infrastructure is and point out that they have some ungodly average for downstream. Then whenever I talk to a gamer from the UK, Europe, Korea, China...they all say how they can't download a patch very quickly because they're barely above fax machine speeds.

Any number of things can affect download speed. Type of internet connection, max download speed normally capable (I.E. throughput in networking terms), time of day or even if your neighbors are using their internet connections and what they're doing. That's just to name a few of the more common factors. Your computer could have been having a bad day too. I.E. it could have been running slow that day.

I just installed the game from scratch, took about 4 hours with my incredibly lame 5 Mb download speed.

Hey Injury, really happy for you that you have an install in 4 hours. I hope the game works well for you.

In my thread about 'Trial download' I have detailed some concern and related some issues regarding the Defiant trial.

Currently, it's around the 26 hour mark since my initial attempt to DL the client, the patcher threw up an error and I had to restart it and I am now at a 'Time Remaining' of just a very little under 6 hours. My patch 'Rate' has been hovering around 2.3x for all the monitoring I have done - of course, I do not know what it has been while I slept or was otherwise unable to check it.

The DL is really eating in to the trial time and I will not be playing in the early hours of the morning so it looks like I may not get to play until tomorrow. So much for a 72 hour trial!

To me it seems that Trion made a huge mistake having the trial start before allowing DL (it activates as soon as you register interest with a new account or through your current TRION account). The incredibly slow and somewhat problematic DL / patch is in no way making me feel comfortable about Defiant and this, aligned with the 72 hour trial limit, is not setting a good example.

It should be noted that I have been monitoring my router as well as the DL and my Down stream has altered hardly any (when I have seen it) and remains at 29xxKbps. Further to this, there has only been one 10 minute phone call and one 'drop call' from a mobile phone to our land line (the ADSL line)and the internet has only been used for these forums a few times.

I noted elsewhere that I know about the fact that there can be many reasons for a slow DL and patch error(s) but this particular DL / patch / install is probably the worst I have ever seen. RIFT and other games took much less time to DL and get up and running - but then i suppose that's just how things happen!

Anywho, I'll submit this then log out and leave the broadband solely for the Defiant DL. Wish me luck!

    Good luck.

Whenever I have huge downloads like this, I always always always leave my system alone during the duration. Every open web page consumes a little bandwidth that the patcher could be using.
