I've been thinking about this issue recently. Part of my initial response has to do with Fast Travel and how fast we get vehicles and how fast those vehicles go.

    - Vehicles drive so fast in this world that we can go from one side of it to the other in approx 5 minutes.
    - The world goes by to fast to even enjoy it in a vehicle
    - In a vehicle I rarely stop to do an emergency / side mission
    - Fast travel takes me from one side of the world to the other in 20 seconds, it even takes me to a load screen
    - Not enough variety in the world to push people to want to explore, same brownish textures throughout the world
    - One thing that is really lacking is a sense of depth to the environment, it feels empty of life (ie. lack of NPC vendors, guards, on the job NPCs, etc.)
    - Where are the rabid birds, wolves, bears, etc?
    - Where are the epic battles between Hulkers and Volge?
    - Where are the NPC's that are exploring the world?
    - Where is the depth....?

    Just a few thoughts.

Dr. Katan...I know what you mean. I understand that per the "lore" the area we are in is one of the less populated areas....but I wish that they would open the map a bit more and add a real town. I made a long thread (because I kept thinking of things and adding them) a while back about a "player built" town that I thought would have been great (it's in the suggestion section....search civilization and it should be the first one that pops up) to actually give players a sense of being part of the community and having something to fight for.

You're not kidding about it being long, but as I recall it was a great read.

Who wants to climb and explore hills when there's Volge to kill?

Put the Volge in the hills as "the hills have eyes" lol.

I didn't start off that long....it got that way after I went back 3 times and edited with additional things that I thought of. LOL.....There was a lot of positive feedback....just hope that someone at Trion took the time to read it. I bumped it once and won't do it again because I don't believe in "self-bumping" but I do notice that it is still being read.

That is because it is a good read, with tea/coffee/soda and your fave pastry in hand.

So quiet you can hear voices in the wind of players past. Really hope they add a lot of stuff to go out and find. I love this game almost as much as my own mother (think I need to get out more) but I wish there was life beyond the hills.
    I know this feel.

I do feel though that lore can be bent to make a game better. I remember playing Asheron's Call 2 and it was set in a similar post apocalyptic future where all the towns were destroyed and it was the play base that was supposed to fix it all. That game died a quick death because it lacked a sense of place, depth and belonging.

There is an aspect to the game that lacks that human feel. Specifically when most of the NPC interactions you get in the game are with a tin can vendor machine. When they placed the Echelon mercs for joining instances, shadows wars and pvp it actually added to the world.

Have you ever had a chance to explore behind the Headlands Transit Depot? There are about 15-20 shacks in behind it. Completely empty. What if they had NPC's there that sold random items, children running around playing, villagers talking, etc. Headlands would go from being a random fast travel location to get to the closest Arkfall to being a hub of activity, a real town feel.

I like these threads, it adds to the community.
