As to the topic, was it ever actually confirmed that this was a real player? There was some accusations thrown around that this could have been rigged with a "plant", and, as far as I know, no one ever came forward and said "Yes I know that person and played with them in-game."...

I honestly feel like from the get go, the writers had a character spot that they needed to fill. The contest was what it was, but if you read the character bio for Alethea it provides the opportunity to introduce a Votan Pale War vet with their own perspective, existential crisis and the narrative opportunities that provides.

I'd be willing to bet this character was already in existence before the contest launched and they just picked the avatar that they felt fit that bill the best.

If I had to compare the story from the episodes from Firefly with Defiance.. Well, let's not.

Haha, aside from the gorgeous actresses (you might recognize 1 from V and Suits), it also looked like it had a higher production value. That it's cancelled doesn't make it necessarily a worse series then Defiance. Personally, cancelled or not, I find Firefly to be a better series then Defiance.
