My idea for making shotguns more viable

Obviously this may have to be balanced for pvp but how about having shotguns do bonus damage based on how many pellets hit the target?

Like 10% or 20% something easy to tune for balancing or maybe a just and extra damage number that can be used for new synergies or rolls!

What do you all think? I think it works out because you'd still have to be close to do the extra damage and this would help shotguns tremendously since they rarely benefit from crit which seems to be the pve stat.

Or they could actually just increase the overall damage on shotguns so they performed like real shotguns.

Buckshot at close range should do serious damage and a single slug at a longer range should be a lot more accurate and still quite damaging.

Don't even know what they were thinking with the charge shotguns, unless they wanted to make the other shotguns to look better by comparison. Then again I don't know what they were thinking with any of the shotguns.

Is it better to out-monster the monster or to be quietly devoured?

Maybe an increase in damage by a little bit. As for the charged shotguns, I like the Tornado; it does just fine on its own.
The clock goes round and round.
    Where it goes nobody knows.
Except those few who don't try and loose.
The clock keeps ticking as fortune glooms.
Fore those who are loose with what they choose.
The clock keeps ticking over those bafoons while the watchful eye always looms.

Plenty, but shouldn't this have been posted in the suggestions section?

Shotguns already have the basics of the mechanics you suggested. More pellets hit = more damage done. Wanting to add even more damage the more pellets hit doesn't make much sense. Why not just up the pellet count and thus the overall damage potential instead? Oh, that's right. They got nerfed for some reason.....

If you want to make shotguns more viable, the spread pattern is the first factor to consider. Most shotties have too wide a spread, and the pellets go evereywhere but the target. That means, unless you're close enough to use a charge blade, you'll easily waste half or more of the potential damage on a shot. Furthermore, the pseudo-oval pattern only compounds the problem, widening the shot dispersion and causing an even higher amount of pellets to miss an upright, man-shaped target. So my suggestion is:
    • Make shotguns fire a round shot pattern. You normally need special chokes to flatten the pattern like it is in the game, and I haven't seen any wide use of it in RL.
    • Make the pattern diameter as wide as the smallest existing pattern atm. Sawn-off shotguns ought to be wider, of course, due to barrel length. The pattern size of a lot of the shotguns is ridiculous, and just trying to hit a target with a few of the pellets per shot is just silly, when targets are as bullet spungey as they are.
    • Have additional barrel mods to modify pattern size and shape.

Make them do close to the damage they say?

I just got a purple FRC Sawed-Off Scattergun that claims base damage of 255x8. I even put three synergy mods on it. I have shot Hellbugs from point blank and I am lucky if each shot does 12 damage. I don't think it'd even kill a small bug with one shot. I paid a lot for the mods for this and not a happy camper.

    Are these bugged?

    Normalize weapon damage in PvP.

    Make shotguns stronger in PvE.
    Done!

Not a bad start, but it doesn't solve the viability problem for PVE The shotguns dont put out enough damage even at close range to kill some of the mid level or upper level enemies out there. So either they beef up the clips, or beef up the damage output. Because the shotguns are only good enough to be a back up weapon in this current state, and there are sooo many better options for sidearms. Shotguns need to be the low to mid range heavy hitting weapon. The only one that is usable is the VBI Cluster shot. All other models need to be balanced.
On a similar note the Rocket Launchers need to be balanced better as well. Right now only the swarm cannon is worth using, and is perk reliant.

    Just my 2 cents.

Everything besides the Berserker and VBI Slugger are good at what they do.

Shotguns are beast, and the proof with that is ppl still use them. A lot of them do 800-1000+ dmg a shot up close. And are balanced as can be. What more could you want? Oh yeah thats right, 2000+ dmg and 20 round mags if a lot of you could have it your way.

How about we get a gun that auto hits too!..lol oh wait...
