Defiance is just a game its not free 2 play for it to be classed as free to play you get the client for free and able to play the game thoroughly without having to pay a thing and free to pay games have micro-transactions in them as well as subscription based games.
the subscription to defiance is the game itself its like £40 or $50 for the game and that can be classed as a lifetime subscription. world of warcraft is a pay to play game you pay a subscription each month to play it but can have a trial version of it which can be played for free for a limited time (this can be called a pc demo).

so understand the real terms before you use them and just because one person says in an interview what there opinion is or what they think is free to play can be completely different from the majority of people

Trust me I understand the terms and when they are used, when you talk about free to play versus subscription you are referring to the act of actually using the game independent of whether or not you have to pay for the client, this has and always will be the case. It is the term used to describe the "payment" method to keep the game up and running.
