My guess is they want to hide the shrinking interest in the community
The majority of game forums do this, it isn't out of the ordinary. However when we have things like Steam Charts that tells the story for itself.
They've disabled a lot of things with this forum for some odd reason. They got rid of the message wall, they got rid of private message receipts (this one makes reeks of "hey we don't want you knowing that we're ignoring your pms")

Actually it was most likely tied to the spam posts.
Many spam bots find active forums and post as a means to generate revenue through link clicking. Disabling a register of activity can combat this.
It could also have been a way for someone to hack the site, a fault script or something, and removing it keeps all our info safe.
