I'll have to log into Guild Wars again and see. I remember running into someone with the same name as me at the start of the game. Maybe they replaced an L with an I or other some such thing. I'll have to look. But we had a laugh over it in-game. Maybe a better example I could have used was Champions Online that allowed for the same name @AccountName. So you and I both could be "Superman" but the @AccountName was the important part.
Logging into the game now, I saw this:
That's what I was referring to.Your display name is a unique account identifier that consists of a name and a randomly generated four-digit code. You'll use it on the Forums, and in Guild Wars 2 after launch. The name and four-digit code will be your handle on the Forums. The four-digit code does not appear in the game itself unless another player chooses the same name, in which case both your name and the four-digit code will appear.

primus was saying that the characters were flagged with an invisible number so you can have the same name. but you cant and the only thing with the unique number is the account name and that was for security reasons.
