Name reservation for pre-order

yea i know thats what i said primus was saying that the characters were flagged with an invisible number so you can have the same name. but you cant and the only thing with the unique number is the account name and that was for security reasons.

i played it from day 1.

I'll have to log into Guild Wars again and see. I remember running into someone with the same name as me at the start of the game. Maybe they replaced an L with an I or other some such thing. I'll have to look. But we had a laugh over it in-game. Maybe a better example I could have used was Champions Online that allowed for the same name @AccountName. So you and I both could be "Superman" but the @AccountName was the important part.

Logging into the game now, I saw this:

Your display name is a unique account identifier that consists of a name and a randomly generated four-digit code. You'll use it on the Forums, and in Guild Wars 2 after launch. The name and four-digit code will be your handle on the Forums. The four-digit code does not appear in the game itself unless another player chooses the same name, in which case both your name and the four-digit code will appear.

That's what I was referring to.

I don't think pre-order should give priority on name selection. Its just 5 bucks to preorder. I think forum activity or even Forum name should be the way of getting your name reserved.

I'd have to agree with Kaoslion here, preorder's are pretty much already set in stone, but if they could do it through forum name or foum activity/use that would probably be the best bet if they ever did it.

yeah GW2 your account name had the hidden 4 digit number, your actual character names had to be unique.

I'd be happy to throw £2-3 at name reservation, for peace of mind... I've burned through 3 general names and 2 "professional" names to end up with DrNoesis over the last 15 or so years of gaming as random people slowly start trying to half inch my handles.. (and someones been trying again with DrNoesis recently )
As others have said, I don't believe its a "pre-order" level thing, its definitely more of an extra service...

I think there's an early access when pre-ordering "Includes access to at least one (1) Defiance™ beta testing phase. In-game items will be activated and applied to your account upon Early Access." so people could create their characters before the official release.

yea when you look at a character it gives you there account name, character has to be unique

as long as i get one of my names im happy
