They said in a stream that the skies "are not where you really want to be right now". Whatever that means? Debris falling I guess.

Well, they didn't say no outright. Maybe it will be added eventually. Who knows.

The lore reason is that apparently the broken Ark ships created a low level debris field in the atmosphere that makes air travel extremely hazardous if not downright suicidal. Though that makes NO sense taking into account of air resistance and such. I guess since ark falls are pretty common it could be just to much of a chance to be caught in the air when at anytime you could have stuff impacting your craft and making it Swiss cheese at best.

The actual production reason is that Scify found it to expensive to have aircraft on the show regularly, and this was a production consent. Just like they wanted horses but Trion said it would take months to make them in game.

True, shows that do well tend to get budgets expanded. Which could mean the game could see them too.

I dunno why they say it would take months to put a horse in the game.

If that were true that something as simple as a horse took that long, then this game would have to be in development for a whole lot longer than 4yrs
I used to be an eager Ark Hunter like you, then i took a "soon" to the ear.

Well maybe the animation, controls, and such might be part of why. After all you would have to animate jumping off a horse, animations for controlling the horse, and whatever else. It would take more specialized elements then making a car or bike where if you hide the character in the model you can 'cheat' more.

That, and in one of the streams the guy had his ATV blown from under him and was surrounded by parts of said ATV. If they did something similar with an animal like a horse...well that might be a bit much for some people. If they just showed the horse falling over it would still upset people. (easy to replace a mechanical device like an ATV, but might be much if you just had a stockpile of horses.)

But that is just guessing from info in the article. I don't think there were specifics on the why since it was just talking about the concessions both parties made in production of the game/show.

It's not just as simple as putting a horse model in the game and done with it. There is a lot more consideration that needs to be put into it.

They need to make sure the horse functions properly in the game world. That means they need to have animations ready for the horse which uses a completely different skeleton then anything else they have in the game. They also need to make sure it looks good as it's running up and down the rocky terrain all over the place. That's a lot easier to do with a vehicle where the wheels are round and you don't have to worry about animating them differently depending on how fast you're going and what angle you're hitting the ground below you. Not to mention all the other mount requirements need to be fulfilled which means they need to take into account what it would work like with a player on the horse's back.

To be certain it can be done, so the possibility is there. But this requires a significant amount of development time. Time better spent making the rest of the game better overall.

Particularly when, in all likelihood, the faster wheeled vehicles will probably end up getting used over these horses by the majority of players.

I know you can't just click a few buttons and BAMMMM a horse appears in game, nor do i think it would be a walk in the park to do so. But if even 1/4 of the things in-game took months to put in, it would still be beyond 4yrs development time.

    That's all i'm saying.

@Terra - please don't post things that sound like facts. There may be some airborne craft within the show.

With any online game you can never say never - it's just that right now there are none.
