I've seen Johnny Saint (from England) wrestled a couple of years ago, the best match on the card, doing more acrobatics and taking better bumps than anybody else that night. It was his 70th birthday. Real champion there, nobody comes close.

Why is that so important? There are countless sport where you don't oppose directly an opponent. If a guy decides to run a marathon all by himself and beats his own record, is it less of a REAL sport than if he beats 30.000 people?
