This game has RPG elements. COD has RPG elements, but that doesn't make it an RPG. Picking up weapons off of fallen enemies in COD is not an RPG element. The XP gains, and general character progression are RPG elements... This game is an MMOTPSRPG as the character progression/role development are more fundamental aspects of the core gameplay, unlike COD.

If I recall correctly, a lot of the true RPG elements consist of a dice roll. Since this is a shooter with a base damage vs. locational hits, we are looking at a shooter element without any dice roll. MMORPGs as we look at it, is mostly like a turn base, (more of dice rolling) mechanics with a lot of factors involving parry, miss, hit, critical, glancing, attributes, etc.

No, that's just a common way to handle combat and other systems in a game, and has been common in RPG's (Dungeons and Dragons~ vs Axis and Allies +other turn based strategies). Dice rolls = RNG = variation.

What makes a game an RPG, to me, is that the sum of RPG elements are essential, fundamental, and integral to the core gameplay mechanics. (Remove character progression from COD and you have COD, remove character progression from Dragon Age and you have a long, somewhat interactive book.)

In order for a game to be considered an "rpg" there would have to be classes and a set skill/talent trees and leveling system. There are no classes. I guess you could say the "classes" revolve around the 4 main abilities you can select, but to say that would be very generous in my opinion. Also, the "leveling" system is completely ******ed. Instead of going with the standard level 1-50 or 60 or whatever level cap they could have chosen, they(trion) decided they wanted to be creative and do something new. The increments in which you "level up" your EGO rank seem to be completely random and pointless.

Most of the ego skills you can unlock also seem quite useless to me, except for a select few which most people will probably go with. But maybe that's just my opinion.

In the matter of it being an MMO, I would also agree with many others that it very barely meets the criteria. Being on one server with massive phasing and barely seeing anyone else unless you're in an instance, arkfall event, pvp, or happen to be doing the same mission, does not give it an MMO feel. Nor does it encourage a sense of community or teamplay. Everytime I've died and there happened to be someone near me, they just walked away instead of reviving. And not to mention the absolutely horrible excuse for a chat system which I didn't even know existed until I accidentally hit enter and tried to move, only to see the letters I was hitting appear on my screen.

This game had a lot of potential, and it still does considering it's only the first day of release. However, if I were to write a review on it at this moment, it would not fare well at all.

Getting back to the main point, I would not consider this an MMORPG, more of a "TPS???" Hopefully Trion fixes the chat, adds servers, gets rid of the phasing, redoes the whole ego leveling system and skills, repolishes the UI, adds classes, and probably some other things that I can't remember right now, if they want this to be considered an MMORPG.

I agree completely. Ego skills are unnecessary to complete the task, weapons do not get any better based on ego rating (as far as I know), too much phasing makes it feel like a single player game, bad chat doesn't give any reason for communication, and it's hard to be viewed as an "MMORPG." People argue "it's not! It's an mmotps!!111!!1" then you have others yelling, "MMORPG!" based on the situation.

With the previously mentioned things above, there isn't really any incentive to get 5000 ego or legendary guns when the normal guns work fine if you're able to aim them. So grind all you want but it'll feel the same to an averagely equipped/leveled player.

I'd say that if WoW is an "RPG" then this game has every right to be called one.

Guys, look... just because you don't have a row of Hotbars under your character, or you aren't setting your Elfin "Tank" named "Dark One" to auto-attack with a 2-handed sword, doesn't mean it isn't an RPG. I guarantee you that if this game offered that sort of gameplay, the very first thing you would say is, "It's a WoW-Clone... with guns!" We all know that's what would be said about it... and frankly.. I'm tired of playing those kinds of games. I've been wanting a game similar to this for YEARS! Never mind the setting, the lore, the era... all I ever wanted out of a "different MMO experience" was something that didn't have me mashing my 1-9 Keys to queue Abilities that were nothing more than a glorified "Magic The Gathering" card game. That **** is so... old.

As far as it being Multiplayer... Start grouping with people, and stop complaining about the game being "Solo". The difficulty of the game scales with the number of players. You won't have it any easier or harder either way.

Rpg is not about hotbars, it's about role-playing your character which does not exist in this game. Defiance is TPS game with some MMO elements. And there's not enough of them to be called MMOTPS.

I played most mmorpg games and this one feels very different, the world is like very very small compared to the one in guild wars 2, not gonna compare it with other mmos that had expansions etc, theres a very small number of npcs you interract with, quests are not called side quests in a standard mmo, they are just quests with a main questline aside, here the quests are like "i got a job that needs someone from the outside" or smthin like that, no purpose to them...but the thing is the strong part of the game is shooting, and they do that part good, only that i spend most ofmy time traveling around inspecting flowes or gathering stuff more then i shoot stuff, yeh all mmo games have stuff like that, but they dont amount to more then the combat...

Also given the small content to the base game, and dlcs every month or so, dont make it any different then the subscription method to the ppl who rly love the game, you still have to put in like 100 bucks per year in the game, where other mmos like gw2 have no sub, and free content patches, no go do thos crappy quest then return to a pole on the side of the road to turn it in, i thought that the great feedback and reviews from gw2 given these aspects would make future mmo devs aware that we like to play the game and not waste time running around to got from a playground to another more then half of the gametime. I still enjoy it and will be getting the seasonal pass most likely, but not cause of the mmo aspect of the game, cause its abysmall to any other game in the mmo genre, but cause of the gameplay, that is very good and awesome.
