The problem is that you could apply roleplaying to any game. Because you are playing a role.. Im immersing myself into Bioshock infinite, imagining that Im booker. That does not mean that its a roleplaying game.

Defiance is a MMOTPS with rpg elements.

That being said, I wouldnt mind a few more things to make roleplaying easier in defiance, for those who are inclined to doing so. Liike more emotes, chairs that you can sit on, chat bubbles etc.

I think TRION should get a kick in the *** for putting out a single player game and calling it an MMO... and a butt in the face for duping SyFy into trusting them...

just because you can have more than one player in a game at once does not make it an MMO... if that where true then solitare would be an MMO cause you can chat with others while you play with yourself... oh wait that would be more of an MMO than Defiance... stop changing or altering the definition of terms to suit your gains/needs... this is the 2nd single player game to do this in the past 3 years (BIO)... Just because you can solo, does not mean that its not an mmo.

MMO means just that.. huge amounts of people, playing together, online. The definition has nothing to do with crafting, or leveling up. MMORPG on the other hand..

emm.. try EQ 2, UO, Vanguard, Conan, WoW, Star Wars Galaxies first 2 years, Rift, Tera, WarHammer and many others...

games that have means for actually playing with others by the thousands in an open world, grouped questing/dungeons, an in game economy, global coms... have you played any games other than Diablo? to not know what an MMO is you must be new to the internet or you are trolling me....

Those are MMORPGS. Defiance is not an mmorpg, its an mmotps with some rpg elements. And yeah, Ive played plenty of mmorpgs and still do.

I come from a background of playing text based muds, went on to Everquest, then Anarchy online, various other mmorpgs that I cant remember, tabula rasa, wow, lotro, gw2, age of conan and more. Currently playing gw2 (which is a mmorpg unlike defiance, which is a MMOTPS with rpg elements) and of course defiance.

the beginning of games with the designation MMO was around 1997.. Oct to be exact… it means more than just the acronym the letters stand for.. that was undisputed until games like SWTOR and Defiance tried to change it to mean the definition of each of the 3 words individually , The phrase “Massive Multiplayer Online” (MMO) means more than just many people playing the same game online at once… and has meant more since Oct 1997 when it was coined…

Yes, definitions change. It has been quite some time since MMO implied RPG. There are plenty of various kinds of mmo types now with MMORPGS obviously being the most popular subgenre.
