Hahaha yeah. Curious about that actually. Heard from a friend it's due for release in July. Waiting for that, ESO, and FF14 ARR at the moment. Really hope they do a good job on FF.
Blah sorry about double post. Stupid internet explorer said it didn't post it the first time =(.
Poopie talk, ALL OF IT !
If you don't think Defiance is an MMO then there is something seriously wrong with you.
World of Tanks is considered an MMO and that is basically 15v15 lobbies but due to it being fully online and having a crap ton of people logged in at any given time to the one server, then it qualifies.
Also you take on the "role" of an Ark Hunter in this game, you are role playing as an Ark Hunter working for that man with weird red glasses and an annoying voice.
To be perfectly honest - I think the entire industry needs to have a major overhaul of genre naming. Simply put - "Role Playing Game" is a little too vague a classification these days, as our loose modern understanding of the phrase allows ALL games to be RPG's in some manner.
They need to reclassify these genres, and break them down into base mechanics. Because really... most traditional MMO's should technically be classified as an RTS, based purely on the gameplay.
When you play BF you pick 1 of 4 "roles" where they could be cookie cutter images of the guy the same exact level as you who spent the same amount of time doing similar stuff. You have no single character that you play. This "toon" has no name" You have a handle, that is your only game identity.
When you play an MMORPG (shooter or not) you make a character with the intentions of evolving it into something unique from the players around you. If you spend the same exact amount of time playing the same missions as me your charecter will still be an entirely different creature as mine in looks, skills, primary secondary tertiary focuses etc etc... It is the "home away from home" of your fantasy. No one else is like your pretend you. Your game identity is your character.
BF vs Defiance (2 types of shooters of MMO genres)
This playing a role in a game vs playing a role playing game.
This game will be another example of why people claim MMOs won't work on a console. This so called MMO has no community and never will because the game is designed head to toe to not support an MMO community. There is nothing persistant about the world, No persistant servers means no community will build. If someone runs by, you can't target them to see what their name or level is. There is no classes, so no one is needed to group or help. Everquest Online for playstation was in my opinion by far the best MMO ever, and it ran 9 years on a ps2. I'm guessing Defiance isn't planning to be a MMO community. That's why they aren't charging a subscription. They just want to Hype you in for the 60.00, after that they don't care. They exploited the MMO concept to get sales. This game will set console MMOs back years I fear. Sooner or later WoW or EQ will pull their heads out of their you know whats and realize their are millions that will pay monthly for a real console MMO.
