[Roleplay] A thread on the subject of Roleplay.

Hello there Beta community,

While this game is yet to go public and to this a lot of people will be restricted to their access to the game, I still want to know if people would be attracted to Roleplaying in this game.

So there may be a few wondering well, what is Roleplay?

Roleplay is the act of portraying a character other then your self, using language and a mind set of this character in the environment created for them, both in the Virtual world made for them, but so too the history behind them, this is called Lore.

The way we do this is one through typing, this is to give the character the ability to speak and interact with the world in the manner of speaking, connecting with the world, but then there is also blowing the crap out of things, sure, that lets us feel connected while we disconnect things.

So the main purpose of this thread is to give a little introduction to what Roleplaying is and why I think this game would be good for a Roleplay setting.

I think how they for one introduce the player to the world, through a cut-screen and very In-character training shows me they want to work for a very immersive feel, some thing that works great for Roleplayers.

With there being a TV show as well, this is a fine reference for Players to take the Lore (History) and Atmosphere into account, some thing very rare in most MMO's to have such a rich source to extract from.

But as you may have noticed, this game does feel a bit GoW / Halo like in play, but that's maybe just me.

But to me, this plays well to the Roleplay.


My Image as to what the Roleplay will be focused on.



Being Ark Hunters (And other wise, should you wish it.)

I see it being a group of like Mercenaries, picking up jobs and then scrambling to the Arks when they fall, but for the most time clearing out Hell Bug infestations, bringing the lead to a fire fight along with Convoys, rescue missions and a whole load of other things, all great to do as a group, In character.

And then when the times come that we're not killing things?

Well, then we can rally up as a gang and chill out, getting drunk and fighting at The Crater Inn.






So tell me what you think, is Roleplaying going to be a addition to this game?

Well, I have looked through but I'm trying to get a complete census of it, not thrown together opinions.

My opinion from what I have read is that we have two crowds clashing, the Halo 360 players and the MMO players, drawn in for the Sci-fi (Like me self) and finding that grounding of level plane will be interesting.

I hope there is going to be a Roleplay presence but we shall see.

Yah, it seems to be a mix of Shooter and RP players posting here mostly. In Fact I have noticed a large number of people here came from City of Heroes. So this causes me to think RP will be a major part of the over all experience. Although I doubt any RP will happen in combat areas, but people will tend towards immersive communication.

I am just hoping these two spheres do not clash, no no, that's never nice.

And I am saddened if it was only in terms of communication, because the communication systems suck at the moment, bar this I would love to see it into actual text roleplay, as I am against Mic-role playing, I type because I fail at speaking.. or sounding like a Voton... or sounding like a 37 year old male war torn.. ya' know..

This topic has brought up a pretty important issue that I wanted to mention.

I noticed many of the 'hardcore' shooter crowd are openly hostile to RPers, to the point of labeling them as freaks and whiners. And to be fair I've seen too many of the "elite RPers" who see shooter players as nothing more then screaming immature 12 year olds.

Frankly it's all crap.

Being a TPS and an RPG are not mutually exclusive. Games like Mass Effect prove that. Likewise one can enjoy playing a shooter and enjoy roleplaying their character at the same time. Anyone who disrespects another player and tries to dictate how they should play the game is simply wrong, period.

This game has a very strong shooter gameplay that will attract people who enjoy playing other TPS and FPS games. The game also has a deep and involved story and lore along with individual player characters that are taking part in the game's story - and this will attract many roleplayers as well.

If you don't like RP, just don't participate, do your own thing and ignore the people who are talking amongst themselves. They literally have zero impact on your gameplay. On the flip side, you don't have to be a crazy shooter master to enjoy the game. You can take the game at a casual pace, do some side quests or challenges, and just enjoy the ride.

But make no mistake, there will be roleplayers in this game, and it is a valid gameplay style just as much as the shooter crowd is.

Thank you for the words and in all truth, I do agree and I would hope the way I presented this post was not pointing that I disagree with you, while I do think that "Elite Rp'ers" are right to block out griefers for the simple reason that Roleplayers never OOC Bomb as shooting event, it just makes no sense, where plenty of Griefers in many games will come along in wedding dresses, getting drunk and cursing out loud for no reason, I'm just saying I feel Elite Rp'ers are in there right to IC'ly completely ignore people whom are not Roleplaying, OOC personality is another matter.

Again, thank you for your words, I am a little disappointed I did not read any actual input to the OP other then pointing out the bad side of when TPS and RPG meets.

PS. If you read this as bitter in any way, it was not worded in that way, but on reading it does hint with such.. but I have no idea how to get my point across other wise.. I'm British, i think that's why its slightly cynical, stereo types, woooo!

No worries, everything here is meant in good spirits.

I should mention, the sort of RPer you're referring to isn't quite the same thing that I was talking about in terms of "elite rpers". You're describing more of the hardcore RPer crowd. And you're right, if you're focused on an specific in character drama, I can understand ignoring others who have no interest in participating. This of course tends to annoy some of the non-rp crowd which is a failing on their part to understand that sort of playstyle. Really the best way to deal with it is to just ignore them and move on.

However the "Elite RPer" that I was talking about are the sort who try to enforce their RP vision on everyone else. Essentially everyone who doesn't play the game their way, and subscribe to their opinions and mythos, are seen as clearly being stupid and immature and incapable of playing the game the "proper" way. And they're not shy about telling you when you're playing the game wrong. Even if you are an RPer yourself they will not hesitate to tell you that your RP is wrong.

Yes there are actually people like that. And again, the best way to deal with them is to just ignore them and move on.

When a game is built with RP in mind it only positively effects the outcome of the game, for RPers and non-RPers alike. Those types of games often include lots of attention to detail and extra steps to increase immersion. I myself have already started developing a character and a back-story though I still have some polish left to get it to RPable.

Because if you don't roleplay and have a 360, you must be a Halo player.......credibility......LOST.
