I doubt it was an epic. I think it was always a legendary, but I can ask him.
And yes when you upgrade, everything stays the same EXCEPT armor plays and the few things that change a little (like recharge delay on Resparks/Rebels and Recharge rate on Tachyon, etc)

Oh, I see the confusion going on.
You need to change the Append names getting associated with the rarity.
Rarity affects armor plates.
Resistance or not affects what the delay/recharge will be (as far as I know. ie. Respark V with no resist delay is 2.25, but UPGRADED Respark IV with no delay is ALSO 2.25, being treated like a V when upgraded although keeping its name).
Almost Legendaries can be IV or V and can have DX and EX, as far as I know.
Like here is from my shop that were NOT upgraded (nothing on my shop is):
#03
Rhino Contender IV EX** (15% ONLY BECAUSE EX)
EGO: 5000
15% Melee after shield recharges
Resist: Bio
Cap: 14460
Recharge/Sec: 40%
Recharge Delay: 9.6
75k
#04
Tachyon Berserker IV DX (IF THIS WAS EX, IT WOULD HAVE HAD 10% FIRE RATE)
EGO: 5500
5% Fire Rate on shield break
Resist: Syphon
Cap: 16179
Recharge/Sec: 90%
Recharge Delay: 9.6
75k

Yep. I tried saying this on the PTS forum, they should have fixed the Roman Numerals to show properly, because it is just going to cause a bunch confusion and maybe other bugs down the road.
And for the second part. Basically the highest a IV shield can go is EX for the bonus, highest a three can go is DX, and so on. But a IV shield can have an EX, DX, or D quality of bonus (depending on what your bonus is, not all types of bonuses appear on D and DX shields, and some bonuses are only ARK shield bonuses). Of course a V shield can have any of them, ARK, EX, DX, or D.
My point wast that being Legendary is not the same as to be a Legendary ARK.
