I prefer a few scenarios over others. 1) they are peaceful and communicate with us that they are coming to drop in. 2) they are peaceful but cant communicate they are stopping by and we freak out but things work out in the end. these two instances work out peacefully.
instance 3) they aren't peaceful. they wipe us out with chemical or biological weapons before we even know they exist. 4) they stop in and give us the option of being slaves or dying either way they are taking our resources. 3 and 4 don't work out so well for us.
Two of these instances are more likely than the others and one is overall more likely. numbers one and three are the two most likely scenarios. If they are peaceful and advance they would surely have the good sense to send a messege before they arrived. if they wanted to wipe us out I'm sure they wouldn't bother doing it in person if they are so much more advanced. after all why bother making a mess and risking your people if you don't have to.
However scenario 1 is the most likely. if they are advance enough to cross lightyears of distance they obviously have technology that would allow them some luxuries EVEN WE already have imagined and actually layed they mathematical foundations for [we just don't have the tech to implement it yet](replicators and holodecks anyone?) and it is highly unlikely they would need our resources as it would be much more economical to harvest an uninhabited planet and then make whatever substances you need. and there are many more planets with more abundant/larger deposits of anything on our planet water and gold included. a species that advanced would also have plenty of genetics information and technology to make bioengineered slaves should they want or need them. there is no reason (scientific or otherwise) for a alien race to stop here except for peaceful communication.

the only questions left are "are we ready?" and "do they consider us worth the effort / worthy of their attention?"

Or it ends up like the Europeans when they met Native American indians.

The culture less advanced is either enslaved or changes in ways that it can't ever go back to its roots.

No technologically inferior culture has ever survived contact with a technologically advanced one in recorded history. Think of the Native Americans and the Pacific Islanders. Oh, they don't immediately collapse, but it's not long until their culture irrevocably changes. No native Americans are going to go back to living as their ancestors did before the Europeans came. They may attempt to preserve certain aspects of traditional culture and language, but that's museum quality. Pickup trucks are better than horses for long distance travel, steel axes are better than chipped flint, and guns are a lot better for hunting than bows and arrows (not to mention that Wawa and the local supermarket are a lot better for food than subsistence farming and hunter-gathering).

If defiance happened for real, I'd be afraid to drive my new car for fear that it would despawn, or fall through the ground... :/

I could see it happening. If you think how far technology has advanced over just the last 100 years, and thinking about where it will be in another 200-300. In evolutionary terms, that's practically instant. To surpass our technology, another planet's humanoid equivalent would have to evolve just a little quicker. Out of billions of years, only a few hundred, and they would have a significant edge.

No idea how it would play out though. People have a weird way of coming together at first when faced with adversity. At the same time, how long would all that cooperation last? Tensions would be high, and survival instincts might take over. Humans get emotionally tired. If people didn't feel threatened after a period of time, then the prejudices and all of the bad human traits probably would come out too.

My only critique of the Defiance series is everyone seems to comfortable together. I realize they have factions, which are seemingly at odds (and the Volge did attack). It's just that people seem safe, able to relax, hold jobs, and are not really experiencing complete hardships. There's even conveniences like money, which I highly doubt would exist. It was only 25-35 years after the Votans arrived, and there was some serious changes since. The world, way of living, all of it was wrecked. Twenty-five years is not enough time to get over emotional issues, health and safety issues, lack of infrastructure, all the destruction. I guess the show does this on purpose to keep it not so dark. Even still, with the subject matters they explore it's a little too unrealistic.

All the aliens would need to do is EMP the planet, then sit back and watch as society collapses, and 90% of the world's population dies of sickness, famine, or violence. Then they can come in and enslave the remaining 10% no problem.

If it does happen, which I actually doubt it ever will, then I'll be friends with some Irathient females before long.
The fact that alien visitors are not arriving is probably because they just too far away.

The other 10% would be armed to the teeth and paranoid.
