I like both, but a good Saw LMG is a clear winner in most situations. ARs are a bit better in situations where you need to hit crits/weak spots at a greater differance, but even then a LMG Saw can be better if you have the right mods and just focus on your shots.
I honestly feel that, at least in PvE, that LMG and detonators might be on the overpowered side.

LMG is not a run and gun type of fire arm, it's not even a stand and gun - in most cases only being effective or manageable on a tripod or caged.

They would have been better off leaving LMG for certain vehicles and as special weapons in instances/dungeons/missions.

actually.. the SAW and similar "LMG's" have become soo modified and refined that they are in Assault Rifle modes these days.. short barrels, foregrips, adjustable stocks, and Reflexive Fire sights like an "aimpoint" with a simple laser integration package make them even easier to use. Mind you.. I used an M60 just fine in a standing shoulder fired position, But I was very healthy and muscular, I can assure you using a SAW while running/gunning or like a rifle so incredibly easy to do, and with a modicum of accuracy.

but yes.. there is and should be some difference from an asr.. being that no matter what, the asr is generally lighter, more mobile and as such should be easier to handle in close up encounters than a Saw.. and yes.. being heavier, the person should be slightly less mobile.

Now.. like many players do, if you went full out on a MG you would melt the barrel.. a burst of anywhere from 3 to 9 rounds is recommended depending on the model of machine gun, otherwise you waste alot of ammo, and risk causing dmg to the gun system and it's operator.

please do not confuse a LMG from a HMG... HMG is the one that usually requires special gear/vehicles or assistant gunners to move the ammo/gear and employ tri-pods and such.

I am well versed in the use of the LMG, having taken it, several times, into a Breach in combat irl.. other than it's weight, it's real downside was jamming.. all the ammo in the world means nothing to a weapon that cannot use it.

Shotguns are my weapon of choice, but between the two choices in this thread... I've come to favor the assault rifle. For reasons mentioned above. I spent many hours as a machine gunner, and it's definitely -the- best at sustained DPS (as it should be), but it really does lack the assault rifle's versatility. I feel much more mobile and accurate with an assault rifle, and with Overcharge + Mad Bomber perk, I find it easy enough to supplement the AR's comparatively anemic damage output.

That said, I -might- devote a loadout to machine gunning for major arkfalls. When the enemy is a giant flying bug with stupid amounts of health, nothing matters more than sustained, concentrated damage from long range. The LMG does that better than any other. When left to fire uninterrupted, it's unstoppable.

Just for the record, though: neither it nor any other weapon will ever compare to the glee of Blurring between half a dozen enemies and one-shotting them with shotgun crit kills.

    For me:

FRC Heavy Assault Carbine w/Controlled Burst magazine mod > VBI TACC Assault Rifle > FRC(Frontier) SAW > VBI Assault Rifle (EMC Service Rifle)

The FRC SAW is a fine weapon (and really shines with Overcharge), but it's too inaccurate for my tastes. I prefer to place the 3-round burst of a TACC AR into their crit box than hose them with the SAW.

Is the heavy as accurate as the Tacc with burst mod? don't consider it to be particularly accurate without it.

2 rules of the SAW: 1) Don't go full auto. 2) Don't fire from the hip. As long as you avoid those 2 it's got higher overall DPS. The FRC heavy carbine is better if you don't account for reload but once you throw in reload the SAW comes out way ahead because of the massive clip, using it along with overcharge makes it even more pronounced.

Someone did some math for them already:
