Chances are, if you're already playing online games over XBL, then you've already got Gold.
I mean, with that argument, you could also say that about all f2p games, as you still have to pay your ISP for internet access, so it's not really free to play.

Needing the gold account is a Xbox requirement for almost ALL online gaming features. That is not Trion's choice. If you are a long term Xbox player then you know that. Even needing a gold account to play it, the game is STILL free. Trion will of course offer it as a free download. IT is the companies that own each system, that decide wether that means you still need to pay that company for the right to play online, not Trion.

The game will be free to play from Trion's end. Blame Microsoft for requiring XBL Gold for any kind of online play.
Sony went the same way with the PS4, PLUS is required to play online games.
Quite so. That's what I tend to play on for anything but Defiance right now. But it does mean that, if you count the price of online connectivity as part of the price of entry for Defiance, the Xbox 360 one isn't fully "free to play." That's what the original poster was getting at.
