Unlike the Paradise and San Francisco Incursions, the Hellfire and Conversion part of the event is what counts for the 7th legion pursuits and contracts. If you show up late and they've already taken out the crystal/ark core you dont get credit. They can get take them out in less than a minute after the timer starts, a little longer if there is lag.
It is completely possible to stop the hellbugs and miners from taking out the crystal/ark core, I've done it successfuly many times. But its not easy; having lonewolfed them with my character at 5368 ego I found that there are around 400 miner spawns for each of the 3 areas (down from 500 pre-patch) the bugs seem to vary between 200 to 300 for each of the 3 areas. When you are successful, Hellfire has a timer and you will see the count down just before Hellbug Extraction starts. Miner Conversion does not have a timer, so Miner Disciples will not start. It seems to sit there forever, I usually hop to a different shard.
If you have a low ego level character you should not engage any enemies during the incursion phase, Hellfire/Miner Conversion. You should just drive thru each of the little yellow circles and hope that someone else completes them. I found out the hard way with my character at 1170 ego that recent changes to scoring (but not penalties) can cause you to get nothing when it ends, no score no drops, no reward, nada, zero, zip, bumpkis. This is because the first parts are so short and the number of enemies so great that you when you go down the scoring penalty of -3000 for incapacitation/extraction is excessive and the result is a waste of game playing time. Also note that there are so many enemies during these that you may not want to use self revive at the lower levels of ego as once you get knocked down they keep knocking you down while you lay there on the ground causing you go right back down upon reviving.
Overall with my high level character I find these incursions to be very entertaining, I really enjoy cutting down wave after wave of attackers. With my low level character its nothing but a frustrating waste of time.
Hope this info helps.
