When I started playing (i think just over a month ago), a couple days later I discovered this forum and that's how I found out about all the nerf-ness people were ranting about. So it's not entirely impossible to learn about the nerfs shortly after playing. Also, maybe a friend or clanmate (if they are in a clan) told him about it. ^_^

I was genuinely upset about some of the nerfs this game went through, because some of the stuff that was nerfed could have helped me greatly being a F2P player. I don't mind shouting out $5 for some extra inventory slots, it's about all I can afford I admit, but their prices for some things are just too much for someone like me to pay for.

At the moment, I'm low EGO in the game, so I'm okay with not buying anything purple or orange because those things are difficult to keep up with when you've found a weapon you like and is useful. lol.

I normally stick with the T3 boxes, because if I get junk in them, I'll salvage them.

Buy the original gane for 2 bucks at game stop they still have tons of them get all the pre f2p slots, inventory etc.

Ya I agree it is a pain when you are approaching the 50 mark and you know its another sub par weapon or attachment your going to get when you turn them in. I just break them down and use them for salvage.

Stupid greedy company is stupid. If things were not so damned expensive, I wouldn't mind forking over a couple dollars on bits. I quit playing already because there is no hope for new players.
Ah yes, another person that doesn't want to grind much to gain something. Seen your type in many games that were grindfest which personally I don't mind them yet the newer batch of gamers seem to always want the best stuff now without working/earning it. As for keycodes do events..Hell try out the pvp aspect of the game you always get a keycode and reputation oh and exp..
Yup, I'm f2p also, except I went ahead and got 2 DLC. As far as many players that say everything got nerfed, so damn bad it's nearly unplayable...ya it's not. Even started a 2nd character and I'm having no issue what so ever and I'm just doing the missions.

Reading one of those "another greedy F2P scam" rage posts can be both funny and upsetting in equal measures. It's like watching grade-Z movies: trying so hard to be serious and unique that makes you laugh at every scene, yet when the final credits starts to roll leaving you with sad thoughts about mental state of people creating such shtako - not to mention time you just wasted to watch it.

But, hey! It's boring here at work so I decided to waste some of my time to point out glaring flaws in your logic, dear OP. Not that it will be anything new. Every existing F2P game out there must have dozens of similar threads. Weekly.

I can only assume that these are your first steps in hostile world of "online gaming", so learn this:
nothing is for free. You either have to invest your time or your money. And you need to answer yourself if the experience is worth such investment.

Let us imagine you have 40$ and want to enjoy some quality entertainment - you browse Steam looking for it and stumble upon two games that seems promising.
One is "Defiance F2P" and other - some recently released AAA shooter. First gives you decent combat mechanics, fairly innovative freedom in character developement, nice graphics, seamless world exploration and story to sink over 40 hours into. You want to play it with friends? Sure, no problem. You want to play against friends or complete strangers? No problem with that either. You want to be in a clan? Done. How much it's all going to cost? Nothing. If you get bored after a week or month or even two days - no harm done. You still have 40$ in your pocket to spend it on that other game if you feel like it.

Just think twice, though, because it's going to cost you at least 20$ to even download it, it's only 8 hours long with about half of that time spent on watching cutscenes and loading screens, there is no story whatsoever, combat mechanics haven't changed since 2001, character developement doesn't exist, and you need to dish out another 20$ on DLCs to customize your dude with hat, beard, and different uniform colour.
Forget about playing it with friends either - unless you manage to force them to spend 40$ for the game (including DLCs, so they are able to enter same "DLC only" maps as you do).
Tell me: what happens after a month of running around same 6 or 10 maps, shooting people in the face to see your nickname somewhere on the Score Board? You. Become. Bored.
Problem is - 40$ is gone.

Now, lets go back to "Defiance" - assuming you are after so called "competitive PvP". You aim to have best gear, highest score, visit every place available and hit 5k EGO cap. After those 40 hours of gameplay it will be probably already clear to you if the game is worth investing 20$ to buy Season Pass and unlock all DLCs, or only 10$ to unlock more Keycode slots, or some fancy clothing, or whatever floats your boat.

The best part is: there will be still enough money left to buy some beers and invite your friends for an all night gaming session.

Now this is a great first post. It makes sense and gets to the point. Thank you for that.

I honestly can't figure out what exactly the original poster is upset about. He says something about "pay an arm and a leg for something we can't personally own". What exactly is it he's mad about paying for? Costumes?

That's actually how I found out about most of the things, and understand why old timers are upset, but hey to me everything seems to be working as intended.

the upgrades cost are not really that bad if you have a patron pass, but i can see how it can be harder / slower to grind if people choose to stay F2P, but it's not as bad as people paints it to be.

It's still very viable for New players as well as Experienced players to remain F2P now that drops and mobs are EGO level based, so whatever drop you get, USE it, as it'll have better rolls than whatever you are holding on to.

of course there are a few exceptions, I'm holding onto a few blue/purple/orange that i keep upgrading to my EGO level as I go along, but most of them i just junk them as they keep dropping way to often, so yeah I only keep the more interesting weapons that does not drop as often, same goes with shields

You're welcome, good sir. I thought it might be more constructive introduction than "Hello, my name is and I just started". *giggle*

Few more words @OP: It's understandable that F2P with microtransactions, paid DLCs and all sort of boosts for "Premium" players is going to cause all sort of controversy. "Wallet warriors" with balance problems in competitive PvP to mention just one (as in: top quality gear and speedlevelling available only for premium curency etc). Trion improved in that regard, especially in "keys and boxes" department (just check how it was done in Rift!). But both gaming comunity and developers need to find "golden mean" between fair gameplay and sort of paid services people actually want to dish out money for. Because developement, servers and offices costs money. To keep game alive and profitable there have to be some way to earn them.

On the other hand, though - just take a while and honestly answer yourself: in the shape the game is now (considering amount of content, playability, production values, etc) - how many people would pay monthly subscription to play "Defiance"?
Because my guess is - not more than number of current Patron Pass owners. Additionally cut all those people playing it now for free. What gives? Empty servers.

Now, I don't know about you, but I'd rather sacrifice couple of beers and pack of cigarettes a month to pay for slots or DLCs - to see this game alive and kicking, rather than not trying it at all and putting it to the ground before Christmas. Think about it.

    *EDIT*
For some reason I have a feeling that OP won't be coming back anytime soon to these forums after his single rage post...
Still, if we can help anyone to understand how monetization in F2P mmo works, preventing them from venting their frustration - it was time well spent typing all this...
    :P
