As I recall about this, if you don't shoot the matron, the skitterlings keep spawning for as long as you can stand the boredom.

You can do that at hellbug destruction too, if you don't shoot the ark fragment. That'll give you endless spawns until the time runs out.

Did this with my bolter sitting on a mushroom in san fran. much quicker than the sniper challenge.
