Maybe not, but sure sounds like fun. I like being overwhelmed in Defiance. Better than being bored to death with one or two enemies showing up at a time. Just gotta adapt to your surroundings and have good situational awareness. Don't be afraid to back off.

Either I suck at this game or it's very hard. I'm hoping it's hard

There are many, more sensible ways, to make a game challenging though. Making enemies capable of climbing stairs, instead of standing around like ******s, for example. Making one enemy have so many hitpoints that it takes 11 shots from a rocket launcher in the face, without dying, isn't really a reasonable way.

I'm also not 100% sure how far you can actually "withdraw" to, without enemies respawning?

I'm not either, but I THINK you can go preeetty far. As long as the enemy is still on your screen. If it's a random world encounter, you can go as far as you want since it's not instanced. And while I agree that better AI would be preferable to getting swarmed, I'd prefer bad AI and lots of enemies to bad AI and a few. At least then it feels like I got out of my truck for something.

Sadly a lot of players are rushing the story and have low ego ratings and only 1 or 2 load outs, so they are gimping themseleves not taking it slow. Im at 400 and im still puttin around Iron whatever its called :P and so far the game has been very easy, but lots of fun.

I've used a Sniper Rifle and an Assault Rifle the entire time (I'm level, uh, 250 or so? and beat all the main story missions). Grenades seem a bit under-powered to me, but that's just me so I rarely use them. Point is I wouldn't worry about your loadout - no offense to those that suggested it.

Quick answer: dodge-roll, be very mobile, and be aware of your environment.

Defiance is FPS with an MMO difficulty scale - which to the average FPSer = easymode. You have to get out of the MMO mindset and really become mobile. Line of sight isn't really a way to lure the enemy closer anymore. It's how you avoid taking a rocket to the balls.

**giggle** Funny, most of the PC people are complaining it is too easy. Gonna guess this game is much harder on a console.

    My technique...
    - Use a pump-shotgun and run up close.
1-2 hits takes out most enemies, and for the harder ones.. you upgrade your damage with buffs.

Currently using cloak + shotgun with +30% damage when cloaked, and a sticky grenade launcher. I start with the nades, unload the clip, and run for cover. Repeat unless there are less than 2-3 enemies or they get too close. Then switch to shotgun for clearing them out.

Mind you for Arkfalls, it tends to be better to have a machinegun for the bugs. Anywhoo..

Sad thing is, I started the game trying to make a sniper... but killing took too long, and they kept respawning.

(waiting for servers to come back up.) :P

    Mouse vs analog stick.

I don't consider it sad. North of the Golden Gate the majority of the story is slow, and feels like it is there for you to get acquainted with the characters. I mean, it isn't as slow as FF13, but it is fairly slow at first. And then all of a sudden out of the blue it gets serious and awesome. So not doing all the side quests early on, I don't consider that sad at all. Especially since pushing through the story you fight a variety of different enemy factions, rather than fighting mutants and hellbugs for hours upon hours like some players are doing.

On the topic of difficulty, yeah, the game is fairly tough. It definitely feels like it is designed for those who are experienced with shooters. I like it, although there are some difficulty spikes. The boss battles really should have a flag that recommends you do them with a group... they're technically soloable but easier with groups.

Yup. Shotty seems like the king for DPS. I run an 3-round burst rifle paired with a pump shotty that has an upgraded capacity. I use the "reload 9% of your secondaries ammo per second" perk and almost continuously fire by alternating between the two weapons. Love it. Such a fun play style. I use blur just so I can get up close and deal damage and get out. Helping me a lot against tougher Dark Matter enemies.

The only reason anyone should be using a sniper rifle is if their head-shot accuracy averages over 80%. Also, insta-kill headshots do not typically alert other mobs. Which means you can pretty much clear a camp from very far away. Which I've done, and I've also broken a few quests doing it. Oops?
