The easiest way is to get them in your friends list and use it to invite. When my friend logs on, I just hit O and there is an option to invite to group.. Often you will have to travel to that friend to be in the same instance.

All groups are invite only. But for clans, open your EGO menu and go to Social. Scroll to clan. You just need to meet whatever the lvl requirement is, and have 5,000...I think. You can invite them from there, or open the quick menu during gameplay and go to friends, then invite.
