I've gotten my godson into playing defiance since it's gone f2p, my question is with Christmas coming would buying him the disc let him keep current characters but also give them the full inventory as key code space? Or would he be required to start a new char?

You keep your character and all of your stuff. I started out F2P on the PS3 and then a few weeks later I bought the Ultimate Edition. Just make sure if he is on a console that his account is linked via Trion's website and then all he has to do is enter the license key from the game into the store in-game. BTW, if you are on the PS3 and you are in the US then you may want to look for the Ultimate Edition on Amazon. The other day it was selling for $30 there.
Hey thanks a lot, I'll look into that. With Christmas event upcoming he'll need more inventory lol, so maybe need to get him a card just for that anyway...
Make sure you buy a new copy of the game, because what really matters is the code on the back of the manual and a used game normally means the code has already been used as well.

It's a steal if you haven't already bought dlc etc.
