Are classes actually different?

I haven't played the game yet, I plan on picking it up tomorrow after work.

My question is are the classes (sorry if class is not the right term for this game) actually different? From what I've seen on youtube it seems like everyone can use the same gear/weapons so what exactly makes them stand out from each other?

Are the ego trees different?

There are no restrictive classes. If you played Final Fantasy X, essentially that 'grid' thing used for your character progression is essentially what the EGO grid is. The grid has the four powers placed equally away from each other, and in order to unlock all 4 powers you need to far ego for perk points to work your way across the grid to unlock the power. Thankfully some of the arkfall code early unlocks allow you to take a shortcut to get overcharge, since the scavenger mod is standalone, meaning you can grab thick skinned (right above it), and then can unlock overcharge (to the right). If you used the arkfall codes there's no reason overcharge should be the first skill you unlock (you can respec) since you can get that within an hour or so of play and perk point gain.

The only thing the starter classes offer you is what starting weapon you end up using, and what starter outfit you have (doesnt appear to be a way to get the other 3 starter outfits, so chose based on the outfit, as the guns are easy to come by).

Not trying to sound angry, upset, etc, just making an observation.

I've seen this question asked a million times and have to wonder why people think there are 'classes' to begin with? During character creation it's called 'Outfits', not classes.

Anyway, there are no classes in the game, only starting outfits, which only dictate what you look like and what guns you start off with at the beginning of the game.
