In the game they make all kinds of references to the "battle of defiance" in the past tense which I do NOT think is in reference to the pale wars but is talking about the fight that the main characters engage in to save the town/city of Defiance in the battle?

NO. The "Battle of Defiance" the game refers to is not a battle in the town of Defiance, it's a literal battle of defiance where Human and Votan soldiers stode up in defiance against their superiors and refused to fight anymore in the Pale Wars because it would have led to both Human and Votan extinction.

To my understanding from several missions, The battle of defiance took place in San Francisco and is related to the whole terraforming deal. But Defiance is also the name of the city in St Louis that the show revolves around.

But the show takes place after the game, there is a behind the scenes thing where they talk about it. There is a few missions you can do with the two main characters from the show that lead up to where the show starts. It's not overly important but there is a small connection you can see in the 14 mins of the first episode which is pretty cool.

This is as far as my understanding goes. The "Battle of defiance" being spoken of is when the Humans and Votans Defied thier orders and banded together. That is why it is called the battle of defiance. The Town in the series is called "Defiance" Because it is sort of an honorary thing.
One cannot go to the town of Defiance, without Remembering the -Battle- of defiance, what human and votans died for. You cant go into the town without remembering the battle, and those who died for that ideal of peaceful cohabitation, Of humans and votans being able to live together in peace.

That is why the town is called "Defiance", Which is named after the battle which is refered to as the Battle of defiance. Again this is just as far as I see it, The fox has some fuzzy logic....

The episode missions are gonna go away once the show airs on the 15th. The Battle of Defiance was a major battle in the Pale Wars. The devs have stated time and again that the Episode Missions are timed missions and that while you do not need to watch the show AND play the game it would be best if you want more information on the world. Specifically how the earth came to be terraformed when it was already inhabited.

http://defianceworld.tumblr.com/ has a lot of back story from the Votans arrival, through the attempts at integration. The events leading up to, and the start of, the Pale Wars. And some during, and immediately after, the Battle of Defiance.

The battle did not decisively end the war, but it did herald in the end phases as everyone kinda went "Well, we're tired of fighting too" on all sides (the Pale Wars was not specifically human vs. Votan) and pushed for peace from all directions.
