Mods do nothing special? I don't feel you on that one. You can turn a 3-shot burst rifle into a 6-shot burst rifle with a mod. That's pretty noticeable. You can add scopes to rifles that increase their accuracy and let you zoom in on the target. I saw a mod that increased melee damage by 50%, that's a pretty big deal if you like to blur up to targets and smack them.

Also, when you say enemies, do you mean enemy factions or actual types? Because there's a lot more types of enemies than you can count on one hand. I mean, just between mutants and hellbugs that's more than that. Then you've got raiders, 99ers, scrappers, and dark matter.

Yeaaaaaah, no. The XP bar on your weapon is for unlocking an ability/mod/enchant/perk whatever you want to call it, for that weapon. Your skill for that weapon type will rise regardless.

Yeah even just simple mods with acuracy etc, make a noticeable difference.
Id hate to say this but the problem is there is a lot of american thinking going on here, people think bigger is better, ME WANT SMASH, progression isnt like that, its more subtle, but equally as effective, and just as enjoyable if you care to actually try it.

The progression is not with the weapons (thought there is a bit of that, too). It is the character that progresses, rather than the gear.

You don't know very much about mods if you believe this.

@ everyone QQing about Defiance lacking themepark MMORPG vertical gear progression:

Go play a themepark tab-to-target MMORPG if you want that. This is a shooter. Shooters are predominately based on horizontal gear progression just like Defiance is.

There are many other ways to "increase player power" such as mods, rarity of items, skill bonuses, mastery bonuses, perk slots, ability upgrades, et cetera.

Also, as your EGO progresses you will begin to unlock different variants of weapon types which were previously unavailable. The game doesn't explain this well, unfortunately.

But if you're expecting to watch the damage stat directly correspond with your EGO rating you're playing the wrong game. Try TOR or Wildstar when it releases.

I guess i am doing it wrong, i know the scopes increase accuracy but i seems to be getting more and more melee dmg mods and nothing else. I feel the game wants me to go in "hand to hand" combat more then shooting.

    I will keep looking around.

Once a weapon is mastered you will stop earning skill XP for that weapon type. You'll always earn regular XP, however.

My game must be broken then. I've been using the same assault rifle(max XP) for 300 some odd EGO ranks and I'm still leveling my assault rifle skill. Ditto for other weapons.

Incorrect. That might be the only reason YOU play games, but that is certainly not the case for everyone. People have thousands of hours playing classes in TF2, and there is no item progression in that game.

Personally, I really like the setup in this game.

If there is no reward for time or effort dedication (in the form of gear/weapons) then why am I dedicating time? What is our incentive to play? Because some arbitrary "EGO level" simply doesn't cut it.

If anyone has insurance to offer I'd really like to hear about a reason to keep playing, or that weapon progression will come into play sometime soon. Thanks for your time.
Sounds like you wanted WoW with guns. This isn't it. Not every game has to be setup like WoW, and thus not every game is going to appeal to those who want that type of game. If gear grinding was in the game, I would uninstall, just like I did when GW2 added it.

I play games to have fun, and for me grinding is the opposite of fun.
