I wonder if the server stability has anything to do with this. I won't link the website, but a very popular game hacking website released video of them having unlimited keys.
Might have something to do with why the servers were brought down.

Wasnt a true bring down way people atleast ones I know have been getting kicked its like its a slow crash.
If they were trying to stop the hacks, they would have brought the game servers down, not the login server. I'm fairly sure this was a crash, not a planned outage.

Honestly, People packet forging/editing/injecting could easily cause server issues I've realized this long ago when it came to retail MMO's they do it all the time and some of the bugs never get discovered by the developers.
Years into some of these F2P MMO's and bugs like this still exist I've been a software security engineer/network security engineer going on 8 years now including development on the side and I can tell you that kinda stuff isn't easy to fix.
The tiniest mistake may not cause a vulnerability in software but rather a library created by Microsoft or other sources which is being used in their development environment which could cause a crash, these things are as simple as unsigned/signed integers being used incorrectly in their code which a very very very easy mistake to make when it comes to long hours of programming.
