You don't do quests for the faction rep/faction currency, you do contracts. Those start at ego level 250+

Press F2 and switch to the contracts tab (its locked below 250 ego). Usually requires killing certain stuff in certain locations, or do pvp or even co-op maps.

I have a question, when you complete those contracts what do you do ? Like my EGO chick said you might want to go see a rep or something after I completed two, where are they ? I mean before the rollback I had filled 2 but I have to do one again, anyhow once they are completed must I do something? I have one completed at the moment and no idea if I need to do something

There are faction vendors in some places, where you need the faction currency (that you get from completing contracts) in order to buy. Crater bar has a soleptor vendor for example. Not sure what higher rep with factions do really though, apart from progressing pursuit goals.

I must not be getting it, because I can see the faction quests, but there is no way to trigger them so that they show up on the map? Or is it something that I just get lucky with and find randomly?

    Find randomly...or http://www.etaew.net/defiance/index.php

Clicking the contract name loads out a map, do note some contracts are in co-op maps though the description on them does not say so...cause the devs failed to point it out.

Also note that some of them can be completed in co-op maps even though there are open world locations for them.
