Now whether that remains true or not, is yet to be seen.
But i highly doubt they made 8 Alien languages just from none of them to be used.
It seems that David Peterson, who created the Dothraki language did the ones for this show.

i've often wondered this in modern or near future games how RP would really work. I mean in those settings you could basically be yourself and refer to modern culture yet still be technically role-playing. You know, doing all the stuff you apparently AREN'T supposed to do in traditional role-play.

while being yourself youre talking/acting out like how youre character would be in that situation.. as opposed to having a conversation about your crappy day at work or how nice some girls boobs you saw were while walkin down the street etc etc

Think about it this way; are you an Ark Hunter in real life? Do you go around the SF Bay Area shooting crazy teraformed mutated monsters for shiny alien tech? The events of Defiance are taking place well into the future so it's safe to say the character you play isn't really you. And that's assuming you're playing a human in the first place.

Technically you could play yourself decades into the future, which would make you a pretty old Ark Hunter. That would be an interesting RP challenge, certainly, but it's still not the same as who you are today. So anyway you look at it you're not playing yourself.

Also there are no hard rules to roleplaying.

The biggest misconception that people have about it is that you HAVE TO do things a certain way in order to RP properly, and if you don't talk like this and act like that then clearly you're doing it wrong.

Anyone who says that is full of crap. The only thing you're supposed to do is play the character the way you imagine them to be, the only thing you need to do is have fun. So you can play someone who is basically just like you and make constant references to modern culture as much as you want, so long as you do it in character.

how do i make references to modern culture but still be in character? i.e if the game takes place in lets say 2099... how does having a conversation about Lady Gaga's newest meat dress today (in the present) fit with my character whos in a time LONG after lady gaga has come and went?

Roleplaying is just to much work for me.

That's why if i ever do roleplay again, i will just be some mindless wanderer charged with destroying anything i am told to.
Therefore i don't have to keep up with the games events lol
I used to be an eager Ark Hunter like you, then i took a "soon" to the ear.

"You know the meaty exoskeleton of this Hellbug reminds me of this story that my grandfather used to tell about the most famous entertainer of his day. She called herself 'Lady GaGa' and would wear a dress made entirely of raw meat. From the way he described it, man it must have been incredibly ugly. Of course, this was way before the Pale Wars and the resulting roaming mutant wolf packs, so walking around with raw meat hanging off you was a lot safer. Still you gotta wonder about people who would find that attractive, I mean the smell alone..."
