From a design standpoint, what's the rationale behind no fall damage?

It totally breaks immersion. Just wondering.

I for one find no fall damage a relief and something I can have a lot of fun with. I just chalk it up to the shield having a anti-gravity like effect at high speeds generated from falls at greater than average heights.

I was curious about this, as well. Maybe the arkfalls and terraforming altered the planet's gravity? Or maybe they just have awesome footwear in the future?

I believe Rob Hill would have to answer that one. Unfortunately, I don't think he visits the forums? Maybe a community rep would be kind enough to bring the question to him and then share the response, because it does seem rather odd.

its something that was instituted in rift eventually due to majority customer desire/need/want

included in Defiance due to ^ majority of customers prefer to have no fall damage. Anyway; i prefer it in defiance due to it making my toon feel more out of the ordinary = has alien tech EGO in it which helps with immersion

love nothing more than just sprinting over hills and cliffs and jumping down like a bad @ss no longer human EGO implant

Because maximum fun does not actually require maximum immersion.

If this game had fall damage, I wouldn't even bother playing it. A game like this isn't going to be 100% realistic, or our vehicles would be destroyed every time we land a huge jump. Those two things would take a lot of fun out of this, especially when you spend so much time manually trekking from place to place.
I'm not Roman, so why should I use their numerals?
