Anyone else new to PC shooters?I need some KB&mouse tips!Razer Naga setup convo.

Hey,whats up people.Like the title says I'm basically new to the PC shooter genre and coming from a console background.Been playing pc mmorpg's since FF11,but every shooter I've ever played has been on console with some exceptions like early Apogee games Wolfenstien/Doom.
Long story short is there anyone else that's trying to evolve as a gamer and learn to use the mouse and KB.
I need tips, lol, this is the second pc shooter I tried(Planetside 2 was the first) and I had to pay for this one so I'm trying to get some help from anyone that has taken that journey from controller to kbm.How did you do it?

I play with a razer naga if that can help with some tips.
    Thanks in advance.

You don't really need all the extra buttons of the Naga for a shooter.

Just go with the keybindings that make sense to you. For ideas though, these are the changes I made that I can remember off the top of my head:
    Roll - Side mouse button
Melee - Middle mouse button (scroll wheel click)
    Crouch - Left control
    Ego power - F

For convenience, I've also moved the menu keys below. I suppose you could also bind menu buttons to the side buttons on the Naga.
    Map - 1
    Character - 2
    Inventory - 3
    Quick Menu - Z
    Quick Chat - X
    Chat Channel - C

As for switching to a keyboard and mouse, just play the game! You'll get used to the controls with time.

Tips for using the keyboard and mouse

If you consider yourself a real begineer, use the arrow keys to familiarise yourself to the more advanced setup.

You can then migrate to the 8,4,5,6 keys or go straight for the left hand setup. Most common is WASD although that is flawed and no pro user has this only noobs.

The advanced setup allows you to know your hands are on the correct keys and that you never need to look at the keys. Also you will have all buttons within reach. The WASD famously has the map always to the M key, which is a no brainer that it has to be moved.

    Forward: E
    Backward: D
    Strafe Left: S
Strafe Right: F (notice key has notch so you know your hands are in situ (WASD doesn't offer this)
    Jump: R
    Kneel: W
    Activate: T (Default is E)
    Reload: G
    Grenade: C
    Map: Tab
Space: Dodge (or select nearest enemy if playing other mmos, not needed here)
    Left Shift: Run
    Inventory: B

    You will have Q, A, Z, X, V to add things.
Avoid ALT and CTRL as these are a pain to hit and only if absolutely need the extra keys.

    Mouse usage:

Make sure you mouse resolution is correct by going to the desktop and putting the cursor in the top left of the screen. Now if your resolution on you mouse is correct you should be able to just rotate your hand (30 degrees) and get the cursor to the other side.

If you have to scroll the mouse across the pad, then the resolution is too low.

Once that is setup you should be good to go. Oh and have fun... contact me in game if you want any more tips about pc gaming.

Thanks to the both of you for your input.I have to say that lipsticks setup is looking to b what I'm needing.Im also don't have the KB memorized so I do have to look down on occasions, which is not really a problem in mmorpgs, but in a shooter, you're dead.
I have Pinnacle/xpadder and 2 controllers but I'm forcing myself to play with the KBM.Nobody is going to want to play with me for a couple months.LOL.The thing is Im an above average player with a controller and a straight chump with kbm.I just laugh at myself sometimes.
I will contact you ingame Lipstickpaddy.

I hotkeyed my vehicle, grenade, reload, roll, crouch, and melee buttons to my naga. Works like a charm, except the melee bind never saves and have to reset every log in.

    just play & practice.

Play FPS games, get rolled in the beginning, and just keep playing. You'll get used to WASD in no time.

If he didn't already have a naga, I would agree he would probably be better off doing this. But seeing as how he's already invested good money (they aint cheap), I'd suggest he gives it the good ol' college try first.

The advantage of PC gaming is that there are so many customizing options on the market to make the right solution for you. There is no right or wrong answer. Personally I have never enjoyed shooters on consoles as I find their controls too restrictive.

There are many different options you can choose and the right one for you will really depend on what works best for you. For me personally I also use the Naga mouse and I find it far more comfortable to have all my action buttons on the Naga keypad itself. This is mainly due to the fact that I prefer to never have my movement fingers away from my movement keys. Additionally when I build gaming profiles I typically use patterns with one button as the anchor point.

For Defiance I have used a plus sign for my main pattern so my thumb is centered on the 5 key which is my melee button. I then put reload on my 2 key, dodge on my 6 key, crouch on my 8 key. Then I put my cooldown buttons in a V pattern from the 5 so my EGO power is 1 and my grenade is 3.

I also have the advantage of a gaming keyboard so (for example right now I'm using the Steelseries Merc Stealth) which makes setting up your movement and surrounding keys that much easier. Again this is personal preference, I also have a Nostromo gaming keypad as well as the Logitech G15 gaming keyboard. All of them are great products it's just finding the right fit for yourself. Of course they all have a cost as well...

    Good luck and happy hunting.
