voip on the pc just needs to be removed, there is no point to it a majority of pc players that want to use voice comms will already have a platform for it, remove voip and add whisper function, job done

Oh yes there is but it mutes all communications from that player; voice and chat.

    That's pretty stupid, imo.

There is, but it's bad. It mutes both voice and text chat from that player, and if you play PvP you don't even know who's making the noise because there's no indication when someone's speaking there.

Also the chat system seems really awkward.. its as if they said lets take traditional mmo chat and make it terrible...

Which is weird, they got it right with Rift...

    Solution

Simple application (only works on windows 7)
Allows you to bind a key to your mic to automatically handle Push-To-Talk anywhere!

    http://www.pushtotalk.nu/

Read carefully, it does have somewhat weird instructions, such as the microphone device having to be clearly named "Microphone" (for me this involved disabling/renaming a few other devices to ensure my headphones were the ones grabbed)

The worst is as OP stated...there is no push to talk. It's so bad I have to mute everyone who has their mics on. Other problem is that when you mute someone; it mutes voice AND text chat.

I suggest to most people to unplug their mics when playing Defiance unless you deeply enjoy annoying people.
This worked with no issues for me using a xbox headset mic on control pad, thanks for the info, cool program.

I turn off my mic and ingame chat and just use teamspeak with my clan. Id suggest doing this instead until the chat is fixed, but thats my opinion.
