Despite the support for only iPads, it is actually a pretty good amount of content. The design is nice. A lot of the interactivity could port right over to an Android app.

There are some widgets in the book with snippets of text, like archival correspondence and things like that, that have a code in one of the votan languages. You can click to reveal an Arkfall Code.

If you are just browsing the files on your PC you can find these files under Widgets. They have the word "decoder" in the folder name. The images in these folders contain the English and Votan versions of the widgets, so you can find the Arkfall codes this way. It looks like there are five codes that can be gained this way, I'm not sure if there are more hidden elsewhere in the book.

Also, in the widget folders, you can view a lot of the galleries from the book. The pages are often full-size images with the text embedded, so this is a way to read a lot of the content if you don't have an iPad.

There is also a widget that acts as an English-Votan translator with an onscreen keyboard. You can actually pull this widget out and unpack it into a folder and use it to convert English text into various Votan scripts if that's something you're interested in. It has fonts for the languages.

I guess that somone with the knowledge, will and time could convert the whole thing to a proper epub file. But it would probably be a manual process of editing of several files and possibly converting the video files. *shrug* Like changing ibook specific tags to their corresponding epub tags or whatever *has no idea what he is talking about*.. Im unfamiliar with the terminology.

There doesnt seem to be any drm so in theory it should be possible. But I doubt anyone would care enough to do it and if they did it would take some time.

The only thing you cant view in plain text is the files under assets\hints and those are ibooks specific?

Yeah, I think those files might be related to the layout on each page.

Unfortunately, iBooks Author is a wysiwyg environment, and the working files and end product can't be converted to anything else. Also, you can't import into iBooks Author from anything else. When you build one of these, you basically have to start from manuscript. If they planned to release the Essential Guide in another format, they'd have to have done it side-by-side.

Yeah, I don't like this being iPad-only either. If it's because there's "interactive" material, they could just as easily set up a website or a downloadable version (website, program, etc.) in a zip and let it be downloaded that way. At least then it'd cut down on how many people can't access it (and sorry for you Apple guys, Bootcamp I guess for you?).

I am all for supporting Trion but alienating your IP's young fans by making such items "this eBook reader only" or "this (insert your choice of media here) only" is beyond ridiculous. Not everyone likes Apple nor can some of those that would like to have an iPad afford one.

Sorry to be "that guy" Trion/Syfy but for this one I'm actually a bit upset. It should be open to everyone.
