When you put a mod on a weapon, am I able to replace the mod with another mod of the same type with an upgraded/rarer version?

@Zechz: I don't think it quite works that way. Someone else may need to correct me, but I think once you put a mod on you will need to "remove mods" via the salvage matrix in order to add new ones.
@Procha: Assuming you have a weapon with a mod slot (if not, you can unequip and add a mod slot via the salvage matrix), you just need to put your weapon in the salvage matrix and select "Attach Mods". Do keep in mind, however, that certain mods go with certain weapon types, etc. If you want to add a mod slot, make sure you unequip your weapon from all of your loadouts prior to selecting them in the salvage matrix.
I haven't traded with strangers yet, but I am able to trade with my brother who is registered as a friend. Opening your social menu will let you access the whole friends system. After my friend is added, I usually just use the "Quick Social" feature in the bottom left of the main screen, select my brother, and hit "Trade Invite". Again, keep in mind that you cannot trade what you have equipped (if I am not mistaken). Regarding the transferring between characters, you may have to do that the long way via trading to a friend.
Correct - there is a downside, though. Removing mods will remove ALL the mods on the weapon and the mods are lost. You cannot take off a single mod and then upgrade with a better mod. You are better off waiting and putting only high-grade mods on the weapon if it is one you really want to keep and use for a lifetime.
If you put some high-level mods on a weapon and want to remove them to put on another weapon, you can "recover mods" which removes all mods, but you will lose the weapon.
Currently there is no way in which you can trade items between characters on the same account, unless you trade them through another party. Both characters must have the third-party character in their friend list and then can trade locally as you described.
Ultimately it would be great to have some sort of storage locker where you could drop items and then access them account-wide with any character on the account, but currently that is not an available option.
Also, someone mentioned that they had their inventory nearly full with mods. Sell that ****. Keep the good mods... sell the crappy ones. Or, spend a few BITS (in-game currency used in the Defiance Store) and buy +15 inventory slots which are currently on special. You can NEVER have too much inventory space!
