Yeah, because the chat that happens in other MMOs is soooooo social. It's usually nothing more than trolling, spam and chuck norris jokes. The real socialization happens on third party voip apps.

Was thinking the same thing earlier. I think I've been revived twice in my 20 hours playing so far and 1 of those was from a guy I revived and died right after so he probably felt like he owed me one. A lot of character go down and immediately extract too so either they don't care or they are used to not getting revived and would rather not waste time. There have been many timed I seen someone go down and I get to them in less than 5 seconds but they disappear.
1. I always see peopel talking but not as often as normal mmos
2. thank gawd
3. thank gawd (from experience.. haters love to spam zone chats.)
4. i always get revived and i always revive if i see downed players.. its all about karma..
I hate relgion but this is a nice quote. "Do to others as you would have them do to you."
Chat definitely needs work. I lead an EU gaming community and we have members from across Europe. For the majority, English is a second language and they are not confident in spoken English enough to be on TS.
The option to not have chat fading out, to be able to access clan chat easily and quickly (either the coloured buttons in chat don't work, or I've just not found an easy way to access the different channels) is vital to building an in game community.
There are many other things I'd like to see added, such as emotes, walking and holstering weapons, but providing a better chat system is vital for community building. The Secret World suffered badly from a bugged chat system at launch, turning many players away. As the prelaunchers and first day large influx moved away from the starter/beginners areas, new players thought the game was dead when there was no response to their questions and calls for help. Thankfully, it was fixed and new players were able to see that there was a healthy population. Don't let the same happen to Defiance. It needs to be fixed before the next big influx from the series launch.
I'd be happy with a world/zone chat and an actual chat box. Currently, you only see people talking if they are in your immediate area, roughly 50 yards as far as I can tell, and you really only see the most recent comment for a few seconds before it fades away (if you even noticed it at all).
And you can't even use the built in voice chat since it doesn't seem to work... It's like this wide open world where lots of people are playing together, but can't speak or really interact.
Quickest way to switch channels is to hit "x" a few times. You'll see the available channels to the right of the box, with a circle next to the selected one. You can use "x" to cycle through the list. It doesn't help with actually seeing what people are saying, but it does help prevent you from accidentally typing something into clan chat that was meant for group or area.
Trouble is you do that is tha channel switcher is bugged also and doesnt always work.

yea the chat system is god awful there needs to be some way that people can interact with the game and meet up want to form groups help in missions and such ... or dont market it as a MMO just call it a stand alone shooter cause thats how the game is runnin now .. there is no commmunity togetherness no one rezes you when you die .. dont bother typin in chat for assistance cause it barly works or no one apperantly reads the messages ... everyone is just runnin around like this game should be called john rambo solo mode ... if ya dont bring social and community interaction with this game and really damm fast ... I dont see this game lasting very long .. espicaly when mmo players can just move on to another game were they can find a community that wants to be apart of the game chat make groups form clans etc etc... workin social chat and community should be a round the clock 24 7 job intil its patched in the game or it will die
Having an option to ignore something is completely different than not having any option at all. So, all of you that say "thank god, I hate general chat for this or that reason" should realize that if we had general chat, you could simply ignore it or not look at it, not use it, whatever.
To make it more understandable: you would have a choice!
Now what choice do we, that want more socialising options, have? None!
