Part of the beauty of the game, do whatever you find enjoyable. There is no "right" way to play as long as you are having fun.

Are they super rare?

nothings really super rare. hit some arcfalls, hit some roadside ambushes, grind some keycodes. once you get out of mount tam most of the dynamic events are good for 4 codes each, plus you'll usually pick up some random whites to de for more code monies. (the green crystals) by ego 300 you've got access to everything, keep an eye on vendor specials.
