Are you lagging?
Just a reminder to everyone that lag isn't all trion's fault.
Sometimes lag can be a bad QoS setting in your firewall, router, or it can even be your ISP.
Sometimes it can be something not even related to you or trion, sometimes it can be an event which has been globally effecting everyone in general like the attack on a huge infrastructure which happens to slow the entire internet down.
E.X.: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-21954636
With the above attack in place some users which are further east coast, as well as on certain ISP(s) are going to experience lag no matter what it is they're doing whether it's simply playing a game like this or watching netflix it's going to happen.
This attack hasn't seized and has been on going for awhile now, I can only feel bad for the trion developers having to account for this among their own lag issues within their internal networks as it's really not something they can resolve.
So you ask how do I resolve this and stop lagging if I'm a victim of the fallback from this very large DDoS attack, well there's not much that you can do but follow the guide lines below and let me as well as the rest of the community if it helps you at all.
- First start off by resetting your modem, router, and PC.
- Second make sure you check any and all QoS settings to ensure that none of them are prioritizing or limiting the speed that the game can take of your badwidth.
- Disable any torrent, downloading, and such applications which are present on your PC things downloading in the background will cause you problems.
- Make sure your computer's hardware can actually support this game visit a website like http://www.canyourunit.com and run their tests to make sure your PC is up to par, the game developers can only do so much when you don't have the proper hardware to run the game.
- Make sure that even if you do have all the correct hardware that your resources on your computer aren't being taxed by external applications ( I.E. Trying to run other games at the same time, MSN, Aim, A video player, web browsers ),
A simple way to go about checking your system resources is using task manager I won't give a in-depth guide on this but if your CPU is already near 100%, and your RAM usage is up there before even playing the game you've got a problem and the game is going to lag for you.
- If you've done all of the above contact Trion support, but instead of just contacting them ask them for the IP address of the game server which would be closest to you...
After doing such, Assuming they've given you these IP Addresses you should then download WinMTR.
http://winmtr.net/download-winmtr/ ( Download the appropriate version for your operating system x86(32bit), or x64 for 64bit )
Type in the IP address and let the trace run for awhile, once this has been going for about lets say 10-20mins then I'd suggest pulling this updated report and sending that over to the Trion support so it can be sent to the network engineers.
These kinds of logs will help them easily identify the point where the lag is occurring and help us all come to a faster solution.
- If you're inpatient and still haven't come to a solution with all of the above,
Try giving your ISP a call...
If you are a victim of the fallback from the for mentioned DDoS attack then your ISP should be able to migrate the route your connection takes down another route in order to avoid the upstreams which are lagging due to the fallback from the for mentioned attack.
Beyond the above guide/advice the most I can tell you is to be patient networking issues like lag are very hard to resolve because there's so many different variables in play.
Lag in general is a very hard thing to figure out considering Trion only has staff in so many locations they're dependent on community input for various ISP(s) and Locations where each different location would be using a different route to connect to their servers.
Hope it helped and I hope you're all enjoying the game.
