no, it is only max for the current weapon, you can buy/find the same weapon and max that to.
it is a time/money/resources sink, so you keep getting new weapon, like in other mmos, like a skinner box, where you dont have to get a new weapon, but you have to anyway.

Those are the game rules and part of the challenge. If you don't like them because other games don't pose the same challenge, then play the other games.
The game doesn't reward you for using different types of weapons, just different weapons period. You can buy the same weapon over and over on a vendor and just keep racking in the skill XP. Trying to downplay by talking about the things it doesn't do is silly. It also doesn't delete my hard drive, I guess I should be thankful!

    The common occurrence is:

    1. "Crap, I just maxed out my weapon, time to swap in another..."
    2. "Crap, I just maxed out my weapon, ugh and I don't have any backups..."

In either case it's an annoyance and hassle that's created. There's no thought provoking decisions to the matter.

They're certainly the game rules and the way the game works, but there's no real challenge. It's just an annoyance. I don't like because it's an annoyance not because other games don't annoy me in that way.

I will also say that as I level up I am getting different types of weapons I haven't seen before and I'm 690 now. Last night I got a "Fragsurge" grenade which is basically a Concussion Grenade (0.0 det time). Either I just never got one (I usually get the Fragblast) or there's still gear to be found.

It's entirely plausible that a weapon you picked up at EGO 350 will still be the best weapon for your style at EGO 5000. Without weapon type experience caps, you'd have no prompt to experiment with different weapon types that require different strategies.
Rather than 'long before EGO 500', they're non-existent to begin with. Weapons of the same model, ie, Carbines for the AR all have the same stats, whereas the Rifles for AR all have the same stats but different stats when compared to the Carbines.

Also, if I picked up a weapon that I like, in my case it's a VBI HP-6 Wolfhound with electric nano effects, why should I be forced to use other pistols when I have one that works perfectly well and I like? If I want to experiment with types of the same weapon, I'll do it on my own time, at no point should a company ever force something like that on it's customers.

Trion has been told time and time again that no one likes the system as it is now(where capping a weapon = no more xp for that weapon type) and it should be changed. It's a pretty simple change, and it would make everyone a hell of a lot happier.

Though it is sad to be swapping all the time. (I'm actually holding onto my fav weapons) I look at it like this. RPG aspect: it adds a leveling aspect to the game outside of character levels. Since its an RPG aspect its an option if you want to level that field (kind of like a skill tree) or you can just use it as is.

Eh this mechanic is so stupid.. Higher EGO weapons should either take way longer to max out OR have multiple tiers of levels that add more than 1 perk.

and thats ONLY if they are set on sticking with this stupid mechanic.

What I really wish it'd be based on item quality. White would cap out at half the current amount, then greens at the current amount, then blues at double green, then purples double blue, and oranges double purple. This way it gave an incentive to use a higher quality weapon rather than just use a green because it has better base modifiers than that Orange you got with a bunch of useless modifiers.

As it stands the continual buying of greens continues but my LMG skill is up to 15 almost 16.
