Not really too high up there and I haven't been playing much either.
EGO does actually make a difference in weapons and gear. At higher EGO ratings, weapons will drop with more mod slots already available (meaning you don't have to pay to add them), more inherent bonuses, and the chance to have a synergy.
EGO also controls what gear you see on vendors, which will start appearing with the same things mentioned above.
