It only encompasses a small area of the Bay Area- Madera, Marin, Mount Tam, San Francisco and Sausalito. Plus there has been extensive terreforming so the shape and area is not the same.

it would be really cool if after some undetermined amount of time, we had like an entire world to play in...like i mean the entire earth, it would be a huuuuge undertaking, and i mean absolutely huge, but it would be freaking cool
You're very wrong in one point, Defiance is a MMO first, and a tps second.
The world Is Big really Big, on Foot, get in a car it turns out to be very very very small...
The beta area is 2/5 the size of the total map. I figured this out by going into Pursuits page and seeing that I had explored every location of 2 main areas, and there are 5 main areas.
Here is your official answer on all this
- This is just the beginning. We're building a massive world and Beta is only part of what you see. For us, launch is when the fun starts. We patch to respond to your feedback. Like in a relationship, we put effort into making it work.
- We're also doing DLC and guess what: much of the content in them will be free for everyone. We don't split you away from your friends and have you pay us to be alone in a dungeon. That would be weird.
- Your feedback has already led to improvements in our enemies and their AI (no Skynet yet, promise, kinda), combat systems, tutorials, stories and missions, rewards, user interface and of course, weapons. Don't forget our massive co-op boss battles either, or Shadow Wars.
Thank you all!
No time to ride the line!
Oh man, that doesn't sound good. If they release new areas as DLC it will split the player base, even if it is free. A lot people just don't bother to go and look for DLC. If you are going to add new areas, do it as a patch so that every has to download it. The player base is already going to be really split up, because this game is on 3 platforms and the servers are divided by regions, and frankly I don't think this game will sell that well.
1st of all, not all DLC will be free, but the content that will, will be delivered through patches i'm sure.
2nd, the multi-platforms are kept separated for now only, as Trion said it was their goal in the future to bring it all together as a big and huge multiplatform mmorpg, they are working on it, but i presume they need to strike a deal with sony and microsift together to be able to do such thing
