Cross platform, but not really... why?

    Hi guys,

Firstly, love the game, got the Ultimate edition and as far as launches go, this one was pretty stress free.

Now with that out of the way I have to ask something. I always thought this was cross platform, and I convinced my friend to get it on Xbox and only just found out that everyone is on seperate servers? (Yes I know L2Read)

I read some crap about Microsoft not wanting its players to mix with PS3 players... if that is true then fair enough, but not mixing Xbox with PC gamers? Why not? They are both running on Microsoft platforms.

This has worked before with Final Fantasy and DCUO (correct me if I'm wrong).
I know it's technically possible, even Trion said.

So I guess I'm asking, is this ever going to happen? Aside from the obvious disadvantage console gamers have against PC gamers for PVP (That's another discussion altogether) is there any real reason this can't happen?

Would really appreciate a dev response (one can hope right?)

    Appreciate your constructive viewpoints guys!

    Thanks.

Because it's insanely hard to do nowadays and nearly requires the whole game to be remade, well the coding behind it.

If the a game is going to be made cross-platform is adds alot of limitations, especially for PC since we won't be able to do alot of stuff that we can do now.

Cross Platforming in games will always be announced when the game is since it isn't a decision that can just be implemented randomly, it needs to be in the base of the game and built around.

DCOU didn't have cross servers, it was PS3 servers and PC servers, the only game that i remember being proper cross platform is Stormrise (i think thats its name) and the console players were at a massive disadvantage in that game, as we would be in this game playing against PC players, the mouse accuracy is a lot higher than a console and the speed in which they can turn is immense compared to consoles. it would be cool in PVE but for PVP it wouldn't work, even across from PS3 to Xbox, due to their different architectures as consoles the way the consoles interact with each other is very different, you'd be looking at a very buggy game if this was to happen.

not much of a mystery, MS has its live service cheat free, their protection for unsigned code and modded boxes are simply really good

ms and sony are enemies on the console market, ofc they dont wanna mix their playerbase

pc has a heritage of getting every fps ruined by hacks a few days after release, so its prolly a wise choice to keep us separated. also the whole controller vs m+keyb is prolly something thrown into the calc

    Hi,

I appreciate your quick replies, although I'm not sure about the game having to be rebuilt from the ground up, in this interview http://www.dealspwn.com/microsoft-so...iplayer-124141 it seems that all the platforms are running alongside each other, and it's a more political reason why this hasn't happened.

Of course there are obviously technical limitations, I'm aware that the Xbox servers have had more teething issue s than the PC servers at launch, I'm sure this was originally meant to be fully cross platform.

    Oh well, maybe one day.

Thanks for joining in the discussion

Yeah it is Microsoft's fault in terms of not having the 360 blend with PS3 servers. However Microsoft cannot prevent Trion from having PS3/PC mixed servers, and am wondering why they don't do that to politically pressure MS into allowing the 360 to join in.

It's hard enough for Trion to get it working the way it is now without adding cross platform lol.

Well it is mostly working already, however some of the problems could be from them splitting servers so having to work on 3 different sets of server problems 3 different ways since they originally had merged servers planned.

What kind of limitations? everything in Defiance has already been made keeping consoles in mind. So what would change if Xbox and PC players will play together on same server?

I think "if" it is purely down to Microsoft and Sony not seeing eye to eye then that is ridiculous. Giving their loyal customers the chance to have a real console war against each other would boost sales I imagine. I can't see any reason why this would be bad for either company.
