Generally optical is better, however laser comes and goes with each generation of mice.
Typically speaking a 1800 dpi mouse from the likes of Logitech, Razer, Steelseries etc, will be sufficient.
The thing to look for is how many side buttons does it have, is it ambidextrous (if you are left handed), do you NEED wireless?, does it have weight plates you can put inside, and MOST importantly does it have it's own button remapping software <---this is huge.
For a nice mouse that's got a few side buttons, the Razer Deathadder (first version will be cheapest) is a nice upgrade. Razer make a free program called Synpase that lets you reconfigure the entire mouse.
