15% damage from behind mastery - ground pounder

It seems fairly obvious how this mastery works with normal guns, but how does it work with a ground pounder ?
    Is it :
    - how the target faces you
    - where the primary grenade explodes
    - where the secondary clusters explode
It should be the latter, anyone know ?

Assuming it is the latter and that the grenade explodes over the target, then on average half the clusters are behind and half in front, so does this mean on average the damage is 7.5% ? Maybe allow that some are not classed as in front or behind (eg. dead centre) so the average drops to, say, 5% damage. This makes the 15% damage from behind at least comparable with, if not better than, the standard 5% damage mastery for a ground pounder. Is this reasonable or flawed ?
