Idk how it is on the other servers but as far as PCNA goes, the scrip market is for high end items is based upon the items demand on top of its availability and practical use. The way we do it in Consortium is that if we sell you something that's high end for scrip instead of trading, we take a gamble that the scrip would be worth more if not equal based on the items purpose. In order to balance that "gamble" we add in a little more so that they cannot resell these items for profit. Our target consumers are those that would use the item for their own personal use rather than an opportunity to resell.
Now this is where things get complicated.
Lets say I wanted an OJ Frag really bad but nobody was selling it at the a current market value of 1m. Since I have plenty of scrip to burn, I decide to offer 3m. Someone sells this grenade but at the same time people see it as "oh if someone bought it at this amount, then I can definitely sell it at the same value", all the while ignoring the premise that this may be an isolated case. Now this person starts trying to sell frags for 3m too. While this person spams either zone chat or the forums, people see the same and follow suit. Next thing you know, Frags are worth 3m.
On the other hand, the market is very easy to manipulate. If you can predict an items availability vs its use and practicality, as well as possible target consumers, you can make some easy profits. For example, Spinal Tap. When this came out, I knew that there were several aspects of this that would be very profitable. For instance, people have been demanding for a syphon version of Purge, this was one of the easiest angle. Another one, for PvP, Fire Rate and Reload is a major advantage and to have a life leech on top is just an icing to this cake. Beyond those 2 major points, it was clear that the only items that'll be of some value would be the TMPs and Blast Rifles. Given that there is only a few mods that is "worth it", I started buying them out over the first week when it came out. Before this event I stockpiled up to 40m in scrip. I spent every single scrip buying mods to a point that I was down to as low as 1m. In time I knew that there would be a gradual decline in interest in buying more lockboxes since they're not getting what they want. Now people started buying the weapons but they could not get the mods....why? because I have them all. Now comes the fun part...How bad people want the mods. T3s that I bought for 100k are now selling for 750k-1m, T4s that were bought from 250k-500k are now selling for 1.5-2m.
Out of my investment, I have already received the full amount and more in item trades but still have at least 20m in mods alone that's still left.
Some play the game. We play the market
