If you are having trouble with dark matter make sure your shield has electric resistance as that is their "signature" nano. If you have the dlc to unlock the extra ego perks there is an electric resistance perk that will stack nicely with the shield resistance.
I strongly suggest a weapon with a fast fire rate (blast rifle) for upping your score while grinding event majors, incursions, and sieges. Should keep your secondary as a gun your leveling to 20 so when the larger enemies are spawning it will level faster. Higher score=more ego. N honestly though people hate it a vot spanner with a low damage charge cost n high link range for the majors, don't bother with healing @ least 40 people will be at each arkfall, once u hit 4k knock out ur story llines.
Level weapons while doing pursuits, you may not like them but if you want to level up you're going to have to bite the bullet I'm afraid.
Do activities with lots of enemies to kill because there's a lot of xp there and also don't forget about doing the storyline and side missions.
You get xp from those also, as for killing Dark matter or any enemies in Defiance it's my personal preference to use a Bio AR/LMG/SMG to break through the plates and then use a rad or fire nano of said weapons to kill them.
There may be more effective methods but I just find it easier.

Took me nearly 3 years to log in 50hrs pvp.
I think it took me 3 months to get to 5000 but another 6 months for that last 1000.
I remember the thread lol.
i went ego 10-6000 in 5 weeks when i swapped to na servers
i had no weapons at all.
if i wasn't working full time i would ahve been alot quicker! my main down fall was not enough time for contracts and it bit me in the end
the hardest pursuit by far was 'kill 5000 enemys that others damaged'
that one was tough, i think i had most success with spamming motherlode coop when it was chimera daily
