I would suggest you try to add it as a third party game on Steam and launch it from there. If not try to look around for firewall ports you may need to open and disable any virus scanners or the like while you are playing, but that is a last resort type deal.

I guess I'll try re-installing once, if it doesn't work I'll abandon it and whateve....
Every time I have had this problem I usually wait about an hour and then try again. I play on 360 and reinstalling would probably take about 5-6 hours (the game is infamously slow to install for some reason on the console), so waiting a little while is infinitely better than going through a reinstall.
Ok so you have to pause the download.
Not saying this happens to you but when I patch on the xbox I have to be careful that the controller doesn't turn off as the majority of times this will cause a corrupt save on my xbox and the game won't play.
I don't have this problem on the ps3 as the controller doesn't turn off so the download isn't interrupted.
